Adolescent Worries About Societal Challenges
INTRODUCTION: Adolescents' worries about salient societal challenges are potential contributors to worsening adolescent internalizing symptoms after 2011. We examined changes in the associations of adolescent societal worries and internalizing symptoms in the United States between 1977 and 2021. METHODS: We conducted latent profile analyses to categorize 118,167 12th grade students from annual cross-sectional Monitoring the Future surveys, 1977-2…
Trends in cannabis use disorder and treatment by race and ethnicity, 2002–2019
Although all racialized groups had increasing CUD and decreasing CUD treatment use during the study period, the observed racialized disparities also persisted. For example, despite a higher prevalence of CUD among Black people compared to white people, Black people with CUD were less likely than their white counterparts to receive treatment and more likely to report perceived need. These disparities in CUD, treatment use, and perceived need under…
Gender Differences in Cannabis Outcomes After Recreational Cannabis Legalization
Age, Period, and Cohort Trends in Perceived Mental Health Treatment Need and Differences by Mental Health Severity in the United States, 2008–2019
HIV stigma and disclosure of alcohol use to physicians
Alcohol use among persons living with HIV (PWH) can lead to poor disease outcomes. Disclosure of alcohol consumption to physicians is critical to inform HIV care. HIV stigma is associated with poor care engagement, and this relationship is partially mediated by depression. However, less is known about how HIV stigma and depression affect reporting of alcohol use to care providers. We used baseline data from an HIV intervention trial of 330 adult …
Association Between Legal Access to Medical Cannabis and Frequency of Non-Medical Prescription Opioid Use Among U.S. Adults
Alcohol or Drug Self-Help Use Among Adults in the United States
Recreational cannabis legislation and binge drinking in U.S. adolescents and adults
Adolescents’ Use of Free Time and Associations with Substance Use from 1991 to 2019
Background: Understanding time trends in risk factors for substance use may contextualize and explain differing time trends in substance use. Methods: We examined data (N = 536,291; grades 8/10/12) from Monitoring the Future, years 1991-2019. Using Latent Profile Analyses, we identified six time use patterns: one for those working at a paid job and the other five defined by levels of socialization (low/high) and engagement in structured activitie…
Experiences of Online Bullying and Offline Violence‐Related Behaviors Among a Nationally Representative Sample of US Adolescents, 2011 to 2019
BACKGROUND: Being bullied online is associated with being bullied in school. However, links between online bullying and violence-related experiences are minimally understood. We evaluated potential disparities in these associations to illuminate opportunities to reduce school-based violence. METHODS: = 73 074). We used survey-weighted logistic and multinomial models to examine links between online bullying and five school-based violence-related e…
Time use and associations with internalizing symptoms from 1991 to 2019 among US adolescents
Shifts in adolescent time use do not explain increases in depressive and other internalizing symptoms, which increased across different patterns of time use. Levels of internalizing symptoms were highest among those with low socialization, low recreational engagement, and those working substantial hours. Encouraging socialization, engagement in recreational activities, and providing mental health resources for isolated adolescents may reduce inte…
Trends in cannabis or cocaine-related dependence and alcohol/drug treatment in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay
Global Pain and Aging
Chronic pain intensity is not an inevitable consequence of chronological age, but the consequence of potential selection effects and lower activity levels combined with individual-level health and country-level wealth. Our findings suggest further investigation of health conditions and country affluence settings as potential targets of medical and policy interventions aiming to prevent, reduce, or manage chronic pain among older patients and agin…
Medical and Non-Medical Opioid Use at the Intersection of Gender and Sexual Identity
Medical cannabis laws and medical and non-medical prescription stimulant use among a nationally representative sample of US Adults
Discussing Drug Use With Health Care Providers Is Associated With Perceived Need and Receipt of Drug Treatment Among Adults in the United States
BACKGROUND: Drug treatment utilization is low despite a high public health burden of drug use disorders (DUDs). Engaging people at risk for DUDs across a broader range of health care settings may improve uptake of drug treatment. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of drug use screening/discussions between health care providers and individuals with past-year drug use, and to assess the associations between drug use screening/discussions and pe…
Factors promoting and impeding HIV testing among adolescents in juvenile drug court
A randomized pilot study compared Risk Reduction Therapy for Adolescents (RRTA) to treatment as usual (TAU); the present study examined whether intervention condition influenced HIV testing, barriers to HIV testing, and HIV communication among adolescents involved in juvenile drug courts overall and by sexual experience. Of 105 participants, 13.3% had HIV pre-treatment testing, whereas 27.2% (of 92 participants) indicated follow-up HIV testing. S…
Associations between state-level policy liberalism, cannabis use, and cannabis use disorder from 2004 to 2012
Association of Alcohol Use and Loneliness Frequency Among Middle-Aged and Older Adult Drinkers
Results suggest that among a sample of community-based adults aged 50+, loneliness was associated with reduced alcohol use frequency, but not with at-risk or binge drinking
