Women of Color’s Perinatal Experiences
Disparities in maternal health experiences and outcomes are a critical public health problem in the United States. For this large, qualitative study, ninety-six women of color who gave birth within the past three years were interviewed by community researchers. Participants shared in depth information about their experiences throughout the perinatal period. Participants largely felt prenatal care was accessible to them, though some struggled with…
The sexual and reproductive health covariates of early menarche among adolescent girls
INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that girls who reach menarche at an early age are at greater risk for negative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes than their later-maturing counterparts, but very little research has examined this issue in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in West Africa. The goal of the current study was to determine whether early menarche was associated with any SRH outcomes in a sample of Ghanaian girls. METHODS: The stu…
Assessing Trends in the Desire to Avoid Pregnancy
The desire to avoid pregnancy—to delay the next birth or have no further births—is a fundamental sexual and reproductive health indicator. We show that two readily available measures—prospective fertility preferences and the demand for contraception [ Demand ] construct—provide substantially different portraits of historical trends. They also yield correspondingly different assessments of the sources of contraceptive change. We argue, with suppor…
I Didn’t Know What They’re Gonna Do to Me
Youth between the ages of 13 and 24 account for over 20% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States but are the least likely age group to be HIV tested in healthcare settings including the emergency department. This is in part due to the fact that almost 50% of youth decline testing when offered. We elucidated youth patients' perspectives on barriers to and facilitators of routine HIV testing of youth in an urban emergency department setting. Thir…
Fertility Preferences and Contraceptive Change in Low‐ and Middle‐Income Countries
The past four decades have witnessed an enormous increase in modern contraception in most low‐ and middle‐income countries. We examine the extent to which this change can be attributed to changes in fertility preferences versus fuller implementation of fertility preferences, a distinction at the heart of intense debates about the returns to investments in family planning services. We analyze national survey data from five major survey programs: W…
Automated Substance Use/Sexual Risk Reporting and HIV Test Acceptance Among Emergency Department Patients Aged 13–24 Years
Provider Perspectives on Barriers to Routine HIV Testing of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients in Emergency Department Settings
HIV testing rates among US youth aged 13-24 years are sub-optimal, with high rates of missed testing opportunities in emergency departments (EDs). We assessed barriers to routine HIV testing of youth in urban ED settings from the perspective of healthcare providers. Ten physicians and nurses were recruited from the pediatric and adult EDs at a high-volume hospital in New York City, USA to complete in-depth interviews to provide their perspectives…
Participatory Methodologies With Adolescents
The influence of alcohol outlet density and advertising on youth drinking in urban Tanzania
Early Adolescence in Madagascar
Evidence on girls’ transitions through puberty in Madagascar and ways in which menarche influences their educational experiences and future sexual and reproductive health is limited. We conducted qualitative research involving participatory activities with girls in rural and urban Madagascar to explore their transitions through early puberty. Key informant interviews were also conducted with adults interacting in girls’ lives. Findings revealed g…

The Impact of Rapid HIV Home Test Use with Sexual Partners on Subsequent Sexual Behavior Among Men Who have Sex with Men
Use of a Rapid HIV Home Test Prevents HIV Exposure in a High Risk Sample of Men Who Have Sex With Men
The study assessed whether at-risk HIV-uninfected men who have sex with men (MSM) who never or rarely use condoms and have multiple partners would use a rapid, oral fluid, HIV home test (HT) to screen potential sexual partners. Participants received 16 HT kits, were monitored weekly for 3 months, and then interviewed in depth. Twenty-seven ethnically diverse MSM used HT kits before intercourse with approximately 100 partners in private and public…
