Family Carers of People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities’ Perceptions of the Impact of an Online Mindfulness Programme
‘Working Together to Meet in the Middle’. A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Power Dynamics in Lived Experience and Family Engagement in Mental Health and Substance Use Health Research
Gaps in the Engagement of People With Lived and Living Experience and Caregivers in Mental Health and Substance Use Health Research
BACKGROUND: People with lived/living experience and family/caregivers (PLLEX-C) can be engaged in mental health and substance use health research in roles such as advisors, collaborators, and co-researchers. While there is a substantial body of research describing the barriers and facilitators to effective lived experience engagement, the actual contributions that PLLEX-C are making to the research remains under-explored. This qualitative descrip…
Empowering and Supporting Young Caregivers Interacting with the Healthcare System
In Canada and worldwide, there is a growing awareness of young carers, or youth under 25 who provide significant and ongoing unpaid care to a loved one. Little is also known about how equipped healthcare providers who may encounter young carers are at recognizing and supporting young carers at the point of care. Drawing from a survey of Swiss professionals working with young carers, our national, cross-sectional survey of healthcare providers aim…
Disability, Pregnancy, and Child Protective Services
We explored disabled birthing parents' fear of, and involvement with, child protective services in the perinatal period, including how such experiences impacted their prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. Birthing parents with a physical, sensory, and/or intellectual or developmental disability were recruited in Ontario, Canada, and completed semi‐structured interviews about their perinatal care experiences. Using an interpretive phenomenological…
Exploring factors associated with the physical, mental, and financial health of unpaid caregivers
The experiences of family caregiver and clinician facilitators implementing a co-delivered acceptance and commitment training (ACT) intervention
Family caregivers of people with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, yet few interventions target their wellbeing. Moreover, most evidence-based interventions fail to include caregivers in their design and delivery despite evidence that caregivers can play a vital role in enhancing the success of interventions to other caregivers. The present study explored the experiences of caregiver…
Time to Count the Breastfeeding Experiences of Women With Disabilities in Health Surveillance Efforts
Adherence to antipsychotic laboratory monitoring guidelines in children and youth
Most children initiating antipsychotic therapy do not receive guideline-recommended metabolic laboratory monitoring. Further research is needed to understand reasons for poor guideline adherence and the role of clinician training and collaborative service models in promoting best monitoring practices
Geographic variation and sociodemographic correlates of prescription psychotropic drug use among children and youth in Ontario, Canada
We found significant variation in psychotropic dispensing among young Ontarians. Targeted investment in regions with long wait times for publicly-funded non-pharmacological interventions and novel collaborative service models may minimize variability and promote best practices in using psychotropics among children and youth
Interviewing persons-supported in an evaluation of individual person-centred care plan development for community-care services
Background: Person-centred care plans (PCPs) have been identified as a promising upstream intervention to address health inequities in the community-care population. Studies in primary care and long-term care have shown that a person-centred approach has the potential to reduce costly and preventable health service utilization, improve health outcomes, and improve person-supported and provider experiences. PHSS Medical and Complex Care in Communi…
A Socio-Ecological Approach to Understanding the Perinatal Care Experiences of People with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities in Ontario, Canada
Contraceptive Provision to Postpartum Women With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Nonbarrier contraceptives may be the most appropriate methods for some women with intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, future research should investigate why women with such disabilities are more likely than others to receive injectable contraceptives, which have possible negative side effects, and surgical contraception, which is irreversible. Research also should investigate how these women perceive their participation in contr…
Mental Health Disorders and Publicly Funded Service Use by HIV Positive Individuals
Unmet needs among men with human immunodeficiency virus in community mental health care
While community-based mental health services play an important role in caring for persons with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and co-existing mental health disorders, the extent to which their support needs are addressed in this setting is unknown. Accordingly, we examined if HIV infection was associated with unmet support needs among men living with and without HIV receiving community mental health care. This cross-sectional study examined 2…
Labour and delivery interventions in women with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities are slightly more likely to have labour inductions and caesarean sections than women without intellectual and developmental disabilities. The elevated occurrence of these interventions is not fully explained by their pre-pregnancy health conditions or pregnancy complications. Non-medical issues should be evaluated for their influence on the timing of labour and delivery in this population
Unmet Needs of Adults in Community Mental Health Care With and Without Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Staff Perception of Aggressive Behaviour in Community Services for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities
Ethical Dilemmas
Health needs of women with mental retardation and developmental disabilities
