The burials at the Neolithic cemetery Kadruka 23 in Sudan have yielded adornments and bone and lithic artefacts that occur as distinct stages of the chaîne opératoire. This article reports on a hitherto unrecognised funerary practice that highlights the importance of craftsmanship for Neolithic communities in life and beyond

  • Middle Paleolithic Bone Retouchers

    K Kolobova, А S Kolyasnikova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020

Anaïs Vignoles, Laurent Klaric et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin de la Société…•2019

In France, the Middle Gravettian (ca. 32-29 ka cal. BP) is characterized by two “facies” principally defined on the basis of their lithic industries : the Noaillian is recognized by the presence of Noailles burins and the Rayssian, which has become better recognized since the 2000s, is characterized by a particular method of reducing Raysse nuclei (formerly burins) to produce a type of armature termed the “la Picardie” bladelet. The Noaillian str…

  • The Middle and Upper Paleolithic Bone Tools from South Chamber of Denisova Cave

Open Access•M Baumann, А Yu Fedorchenko et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2018

Excavations undertaken in the upper portion of the Pleistocene deposits from South Chamber of Denisova Cave yielded a set of bone tools in association with numerous stone artifacts. The Middle Palaeolithic layer 12 revealed bone retouchers and a retouched bone fragment. Along with lightly modified bone tools such as retouchers and retouched pieces, Layer 11 has yielded such stone tools as a point, a needle, a polisher and a tool blank, all attrib…

Chagyrskaya cave is a key-site of the Middle Paleolithic Sibiryachikha Facies in Gorny Altai. During the field season of 2018, field work was focused upon the central chamber; the total excavation square was two square meters. The cultural layers of Chagyrskaya cave have yielded new numerous assemblages of stone artefacts, paleontological and paleoanthropological materials. The study area is characterized by a high degree of carnivore activity. D…

  • The Solutrean bone industry from Rochefort Cave (Saint-Pierre-sur-Erve, Mayenne, France)

    Open Access•M Baumann, Stéphan Hinguant•ARTICLE•Paléo•2016

Recently discovered Solutrean sites have provided little data about bone working. Solutrean bone industry is mainly known through old archaeological collections from the first half of the 20th century or out of context and very incomplete. The resumption of old excavations, such as in Rochefort cave, far from bringing redundant information, opens up new research perspectives. Beside projectile points, awls, "bâtons percés" and other long-known ty…

  • Stable Isotopes and Oral Tori in Greenlandic Norse and Inuit

    Open Access•M Baumann, Niels Lynnerup et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

Palatine (PT) and mandibular torus (MT) have long been of interest to dental researchers and anthropologists, but their aetiology remains unresolved. Some combination of genetic and environmental factors influences their expression, but the relative role of each remains contentious. Previous research has shown that the Greenlandic Norse exhibit exceptionally high frequencies and pronounced expressions of PT and MT. In this regard, they are signif…
