Presidential Address
Frank Knight’s work is examined through the lens provided by the posthumous publication of his essay “Economic History” in the Dictionary of the History of Ideas in 1973. Knight identified pivotal ideas in economics from Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations until the time of his retirement from the University of Chicago, with some recognition of earlier contributions. The priority he gave to liberty within economics shows in the connection between Adam…
T. Robert Malthus's Comparative Political Economy of Prudential Restraint
Examination of the second and subsequent editions of T. Robert Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population shows that the author created a more expansive examination of his political economy of population than that of the simple model in the Essay's first edition. In subsequent editions, the simple, ecological model gives way to a sophisticated general model of a commercial society with property rights, the rule of law, marriage laws similar t…

Frank Knight and the Origins of Public Choice

David Colander and Craig Freedman, Where Economics Went Wrong
Colander and Freedman use their story of the Chicago School’s abandonment of classical liberalism as a way to get at their fundamental argument, which is about the failure of American economics generally to maintain appreciation for both economic science and the art of economic policy. Economists, the authors argue, have subsumed art within science in the effort to turn economics into an applied policy science. The focus on the Chicago School eme…

Economics and Theology after the Separation
The date of the separation of economics from Christian theology is debated, as is its explanation. The process also differs in Britain and America. Richard Whately and Philip Wicksteed’s accounts of the basis of separation in nineteenth-century Britain are considered, and in America the twentieth-century accounts of the impact of the Social Gospel on the founding of the American Economic Association, and of Frank Knight and Reinhold Niebuhr. Knig…

Specializing in Interdisciplinarity
The social sciences at the University of Chicago are renowned for their leadership in the development of empirical investigation in their respective disciplines. The postwar Chicago school of economics is only the best known of the efforts at that university to entrench specialized competencies in the faculty and students practicing a social scientific discipline. During the same period, the Committee on Social Thought emerged as an academic inte…
The Religion of a Skeptic
Frank H. Knight's antagonism to religion is well known and features prominently in his writings from the 1930s on. But during the 1920s, when he was a professor at the University of Iowa and wrote some of his most important essays on the limitations of economics, Knight was an active participant in the Iowa City Unitarian Church. Drawing on research about his association with the Unitarian Church, and his unpublished writings from the period on r…
Frank H. Knight's Criticism of Henry George
The ferocity of Knight's comments on Henry George may come as a surprise to those who are not familiar with his criticisms of other economists and philosophers. But, in fact, his criticisms of George are not due to specifically Knightian insights on George's approach, but rather reflect the different philosophical framework from which neoclassical economists like Knight think. At the core of Knight's disagreements with George is his neoclassical …
