A pilot randomized controlled trial of acceptance-based behavior therapy to address treatment engagement outcomes and disclosure among new-to-care patients with HIV
0.53; 95%CI: -0.26, 1.31), although this difference was not statistically significant. ABBT showed small to medium effects on secondary outcomes of disclosures of HIV status and disclosure self-efficacy in exploratory analyses. Despite the study's premature termination, results are consistent with, but do not establish, potential ABBT benefit, suggesting further testing in larger trials is needed.Trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov (#NCT042012…
Health Care Service Utilization Among People with HIV, Chronic Pain, and Depression
Acceptance of chronic pain in depressed patients with HIV
Chronic pain is highly prevalent among persons with HIV (PWH), as is depression. Both comorbidities might contribute to, as well as be maintained by, avoidance-based coping. A promising alternative to avoidance-based coping is acceptance. Acceptance of pain is associated with improved functioning and quality of life in chronic pain patients, but this relationship has not been substantially explored among PWH. Cross-sectional data from 187 adult o…
Open pilot trial of a brief motivational interviewing-based HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis intervention for men who have sex with men
Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high-risk of HIV infection in the United States. Daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has demonstrated efficacy in reducing HIV acquisition among MSM. However, PrEP uptake in real-world clinical settings has been slow and uneven. Guided by Self-Regulation Theory, we developed and evaluated a brief (15-25 min) motivational interviewing (MI)-based intervention to promote PrEP upta…
Examination of using alcohol to cope, depressive symptoms, and perceived social support in persons with HIV and Hepatitis C
Depression is common among people living with HIV (PLWH) and some likely turn to alcohol to cope with this emotional distress. Using alcohol to cope is associated with increased alcohol use, persistent longitudinal alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. This association is particularly concerning among PLWH who are co-infected with Hepatitis C (HCV) because alcohol adds to the damage already caused by HCV. Despite data showing the associated …

Posttraumatic stress disorder in African American and Latinx adults
Research has suggested that African American and Latinx adults may develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at higher rates than White adults, and that the clinical course of PTSD in these minority groups is poor. Factors that may contribute to higher prevalence and poorer outcome in these groups are sociocultural factors and racial stressors, such as experiences with discrimination. To date, however, no research has explored the relationship…

A psychological flexibility model of medication adherence in psychotic-spectrum disorders
The Drexel defusion scale
Acceptance-based behavior therapy to promote HIV medication adherence
A significant number of adults with HIV in the USA do not maintain adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) at adequate levels. Although traditional cognitive behavioral interventions have shown promise in promoting HAART adherence, acceptance-based behavior therapy (ABBT) may be particularly useful in this population. ABBT has the potential to overcome common avoidance-based barriers associated with poor adherence, including den…
The Assessment of Present-Moment Awareness and Acceptance
The purpose of this project was to develop a bidimensional measure of mindfulness to assess its two key components: present-moment awareness and acceptance. The development and psychometric validation of the Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale is described, and data are reported from expert raters, two nonclinical samples (n = 204 and 559), and three clinical samples including mixed psychiatric outpatients (n = 52), eating disorder inpatients (n = 30)…
A Randomized Controlled Effectiveness Trial of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Therapy for Anxiety and Depression
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has a small but growing database of support. One hundred and one heterogeneous outpatients reporting moderate to severe levels of anxiety or depression were randomly assigned to traditional cognitive therapy (CT) or to ACT. To maximize external validity, the authors utilized very minimal exclusion criteria. Participants receiving CT and ACT evidenced large, equivalent improvements in depression, anxiety, fu…
