  • Dreaming of a Bright Future

    Mónica Humeres, M Gil•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2024

In 1939, directly after the worst earthquake in the country's history, the Chilean state began implementing an electrification program. This plan shaped energy goals for years to come and defined the interconnected grid that dominates the country's energy infrastructure today. Based on extensive archival work, this article describes the birth of energopolitics in the country, using technology sociologist Michel Callon's notion of "interessement" …

  • Unequal effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on researchers

Open Access•M Gil, Constanza Hurtado-Acuna et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2023

The adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on scientific work and outputs have been a growing global concern after significant and varied effects have been reported in the United States and Europe. Looking to gain insight into the impact of the pandemic in Latin America, we designed and administered an anonymous online survey to researchers based in Chile or Colombia. The survey was implemented in July–August 2020, as the continent was declared…

The paper covers the period between 2016 and 2021, concentrating on the work of the Chilean Commission of R&D+i for Resilience to Disasters of Natural Origin (CREDEN). Through an analysis of the o…

  • Disasters as Critical Junctures

    Open Access•M Gil•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2022

In 1939 an earthquake destroyed south-central Chile, especially the city of Chillán. This event was arguably the most catastrophic socio-natural disaster in Chilean history, yet it has been mostly ignored in historical research. This article shows that the earthquake triggered a critical juncture for the Chilean state and was a determining factor in some of the most important institutional developments of the period. Using primary sources, the ar…

  • Fiscal Aftershocks

    Open Access•M Gil, Jorge Atria•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2022•Citada por: 4•Referências: 34

Socio-natural disasters remain underexplored events in economic history, even though they stress societies in several ways and are known for their relationship with institutional change. In this paper, we explore this issue showing that major earthquakes in Chile have become a window of opportunity for important fiscal reforms. Our findings indicate that there are two mechanisms to explain this relationship: first, reconstruction demands greater …

  • Covid-19 Has Exposed How 'The Other Half' (Still) Lives

    Open Access•M Gil, Eduardo A Undurraga•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 15

Socioeconomic factors are heavily shaping the COVID-19 pandemic in South America. Consequently, societies are now facing the stark effects of lockdown, while largely failing to stop the epidemic. In Chile, this has been amplified by decision-makers who have overlooked critical socio-spatial aspects of the epidemic. Precarious living conditions, together with spatial segregation and unstable domestic economies, help explain why mitigation strategi…

  • Exhibiting the Nation

    Open Access•M Gil•ARTICLE•Museum and Society•2017•Citada por: 2•Referências: 7

Three museums are considered: the National Museum of Natural History (originally the National Museum); the National Museum of Fine Arts; and the National Museum of History. Using museum catalogues, visitor's guides and bulletins as sources, this research traces the role given to indigenousness in the museums' exhibiti…

  • Short-term mortality of myocardial infarction patients with diabetes or hyperglycaemia during admission

Joan Sala, R Masiá et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2002•Referências: 28

Aim: The hypothesis that patients with hyperglycaemia during admission, regardless of previous diagnosis of diabetes, have worse prognosis than those with normal glucose values is controversial. The objective was to assess the role of hyperglycaemia on short-term mortality after myocardial infarction (MI). Methods and Results: A cohort study nested in a prospective registry of MI patients in the reference hospital of Gerona, Spain was performed. …

  • Role of age and sex in short-term and long term mortality after a first Q wave myocardial infarction

Jaume Marrugat, M Gil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2001•Referências: 31

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyse whether the risk of death within 28 days and three years after a first Q wave myocardial infarction was higher in hospitalised women than in men. DESIGN: Follow up study. PATIENTS AND SETTING: All consecutive first Q wave myocardial infarction patients aged 25 to 74 years (447 women and 2322 men) admitted to a tertiary hospital in Gerona, Spain, from 1978 to 1997 were registered and foll…
