Norwegian timber exports in the nineteenth century
Essays in European Economic History, 1789-1914
The placing of the first Swedish railway loan
Railway construction started late in Sweden. Not until 1853-54 did the Diet (Riksdagen, at that time still consisting of the four Estates) take even a preliminary decision on the extent and the financing of the first railway network. It accepted the principles proposed by the government: the main lines were to be laid and administered by the state, the rest by private companies. The construction of the state lines was to be financed chiefly by fu…
The Swedish iron industry, 1932–1939
In an article published in a previous issue of this journal (VI: 1), I dealt with some of the main aspects of the Swedish iron industry during and immediately after the First World War. In this account two factors were emphasised as being of particular importance for the industry both at that time and for its future prospects: the gradual and continuous change in demand on the world market which had been under way for many years, but which had pr…
Religion and the rise of capitalism
Ever since the publication in 1905 of Max Weber's study Die Protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus, there has been lively controversy concerning the connection between religious belief and economic activity. Three main .categories of opinion have emerged from this debate: (1) the theory advocated by Weber, which has found numerous supporters aware in varying degrees of their debt to Weber's mode of thought: viz., that Protestantism,…
The Swedish iron industry during the First World War and the Post-War depression
In a paper read at the annual meeting of Jernkontoret (The Swedish Ironmasters' Association) in 1912 Professor E. F. Heckscher gave an estimate of the proportion of the total annual outpout of the Swedish iron industry which was exported. Including material entering into the exports of steelusing industries, it was estimated at 65–70 %. Assuming this to be correct, then only the saw-milling and paper- and pulp-making industries were at that time …
The rural working classes in pre-industrial Sweden
Dr. Utterström's dissertation completes the large project initiated in the 1930s under the auspices, and mainly at the expense, of Landsorganisationen (the Swedish TUC): the production of a comprehensive history of the Swedish working classes.Throughout the undertaking basic research in public and private archives has been necessary, the source material having been used before only to a very limited extent. The final work comprises 12 volumes, wr…

Short-Term Economic Fluctuations and the Swedish Timber Industry, 1850–1900
The influence that short-time economic fluctuations in western Europe presumably had on the development of the Swedish timber trade during the latter half of the nineteenth century must, to an American audience, seem to be a rather specialized subject, and I think a few introductory words giving a background might be useful
