Karakalpak-Australian Excavations in Ancient Chorasmia, 2001–2005
This article presents the interim results of the Karakalpak-Australian excavations for the years 2001–2005 at the site of Kazakl'i-yatkan in north-western Uzbekistan. Data is presented on the construction and absolute chronology of the fortifications and an architectural survey of contemporary standing monuments in the region. Kazakl'i- yatkan was a major site in the delta of the Amu-dar'ya and was possibly at one time a regional capital. A serie…
The Krakalpak-Australian Excavations in Ancient Chorasmia
From about the 7 t h /6 t h centuries BC ancient Chorasmia was located south of the Aral Sea, in the delta of the Classical Oxus River (mod. Amu-dar'ya). To the north lay the Inner Asian steppe (now Kazakhstan), to the west the cliffs of the inhospitable Ustiurt Plateau (further west, the Caspian Sea), to the east the delta of the Classical Jaxartes (mod. S'ir-dar'ya), and to the south two deserts, the Kara-kum and Kz'il-kum which separated Chora…

The Burqu c /Ruweishid Project
The second preliminary report on work in the Burquc/Ruweishid region of eastern Jordan presents an account of results achieved in the 1989 field season. Excavations were carried out at seven sites. These include several late prehistoric camps near Qasr Burquc and a late Chalcolithic/EB IA rock shelter to the south. Two specialist reports present data on the survey of Qasr Burquc and the ‘lake’ (Helms), and the modern population (Lancaster and Lan…
A New Architectural Survey of Qaṣr Burquʽ, Eastern Jordan
Qaṣr Burqu⃓ is one of the most remote of the Jordanian so-called ‘desert castles’ (quṣūr) of the early Islamic period: it lies some 200km east of⃓Ammān (figs. 1–4). However, it is neither a castle, nor is it in the desert, rather it represents a variety of building types and lies in the dry steppe (areas receiving less than 100mm of rainfall per annum) of the bādiyat al-šām (literally, the steppe lands of Damascus). Furthermore, most of the archi…

An EB IV Pottery Repertoire at Amman, Jordan
Pottery vessels found in several burial grounds used during the late third millennium B. C. (EB IV) near Amman represent a typologically homogeneous repertoire. One may regard it as a regional variant of other groups ("families") used in various socioeconomic reconstructions within a hypothetical chronological framework between about 2300 and 2000 B. C. A new set of burial groups presented here is linked into the stratigraphic matrix established …
Jawa, Tell Um Hammad and the EB I/Late Chalcolithic Landscape
Jawa and Tell Urn Hammad are two very different sites in very different sub-regions of the Near East (Fig. I : Ig,2 I). One is an apparently isolated, large nucleated fortified settlement (10 hectares) in what today is a marginal sub-steppic zone; the other a sprawling open village next to a large perennial river with several contemporary villages within 5 kilometres (Fig. 2). It is reasonably established that paleo-climates remained stable and, …
A Preliminary Survey of Late Neolithic Settlements at el-Ghirqa, Eastern Jordan
Survey in the inhospitable steppe lands of eastern Jordan has revealed late neolithic settlements, part of a settlement pattern probably of the sixth millennium BC. Faunal and artefactual evidence is sparse, but the sites are characterized by lithic assemblages dominated by burins. Analysis of the structures and their relationship to artefactual deposits offer opportunities for further research
Excavations at Tell Um Hammad, 1984
Tell Um Hammad is not a tell in the normal sense: it is, rather, an area over which a series of settlements was built from the fourth millennium onwards. These were not always built on the same spot and the site is therefore stratified horizontally as much as vertically. Depth of occupational debris is often shallow. The whole area is badly eroded and deflated. Recent agricultural development has disturbed or almost completely removed whole secto…
Excavations at Tell Umm Ham Mad Esh-Sharqiya in the Jordan Valley 1982
Excavations at Tell Umm Hammad esh-Sharqiya (November/December 1982) were sponsored by the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History and generously supported by the British Academy, the G. A. Wainwright Fund, the Central Research Fund (London University), the Palestine Exploration Fund, Mrs. E. Helms, the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, Birmingham Museum, Bolton Museum and the Man…
Kandahar of the Arab conquest
Old Kandahar is a large, impressive ruin field near Afghanistan's modern 'second' city, bearing the same name. For years the site has been central to many arguments about the most ancient geography and history of the region. It has been identified with an Alexandria/Alexandropolis, referring to the conquest of Alexander the Great. For the Islamic period the excavations on behalf of the Society for Afghan Studies have revealed some striking new ev…

The pottery illustrated here is only a small proportion of the total recovered; the intention is to present a brief survey of the commoner fabrics and surface treatments. The stratigraphic connections from trench to trench were, as discovered, not entirely satisfactory. Though the lowest two of the four trenches which were dug (1969) into settlement debris on the north scarp, viz. G1d and G2b, produced no substantial structural features, the sequ…
TaşKun Mevkii 1970–71
The work at Taşkun Mevkii consists to date of two seasons, 1970 and 1971. A third and final season is projected for the summer of 1973. Excavation in 1970 was restricted to a series of slots and one 4 × 4 m. square at the northern edge of the site in order to test the depth of occupation and to establish preliminary phasing (Fig. 1). On this basis the area was expanded in 1971 to expose structures, particularly of Phase 3 which had proved to be m…

Jawa 1973
J awa is a fortified desert town in eastern Transjordan (Fig. I). It lies in area known as Harrat er-Rajil, in wadi Rajil which originates in Jebel Druse to north. This region of Transjordan was virtually unexplored until recently. During nineteenth century a number of expeditions, notably of Charles Huber and Julius Euding in 18841passed through region, without, however, recording site. In early years of the· t\ventieth century Butler2 surveyed …
