Death Rehearsal
Living is dying, an unscripted, unconscious rehearsal for the premiere of death—one show only for each individual serving the life sentence, cyclical reruns for collective humanity. Given our life as death rehearsal, we ought to hazard a 'death' gaze on life, a gaze at the world of the living, from the cavernous skull, framed by the twin sockets and the toothy grin. Utopian perhaps since death's point of view can only be imagined rather than acqu…
Taiwan Shi f t in Anglophone Fiction and Memoir
Increasingly, self-representation as “Taiwanese American writers” proliferates in authors’ notes, book blurbs, and interviews. A reprise of the white privilege in cosplaying Taiwan throughout Anglophone writings, quite a few Taiwanese American novelists Taiwanize their stories in setting, plot, location markers, and character traits. Yet this Taiwanizing in substance shares in their nostalgia over a felt loss, a loss of substance, as though Taiwa…
To Anglicize and Angelize the Rape of Nanking
Chinese narratives of the Rape of Nanking gravitate to a secular, nationalist mode of martyrdom. With China's rise, fiction and films revisit the Japanese atrocity in a global context, which means fiction written in or translated into English, as well as films featuring Western missionaries and the English language. These narratives include Nanjing Requiem ; The Flowers of War the novel and the film; and City of Life and Death. The English and Ch…
Forgotten Taiwanese Veteran’s Memory of Compulsory Service
Having withdrawn in utter defeat in 1949, Chiang Kai-shek militarized the island of Taiwan with the express purpose of retaking China. Compulsory military service of every able-bodied man, except Chiang’s grandsons and those of the elite ruling class, had been implemented soon after. Averaging two to three years, such military service was either hailed as turning boys into men or scorned as a total waste of the best years of one’s life. This rite…

Sino-Anglo-Euro Wolf Fan(g)s from Jiang Rong to Annaud // Fans lupinos sino-anglo-europeos de Jiang Ring a Annaud
Fans of Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem could arguably shapeshift into a wolf’s fangs, the sharp tips of China’s Social Darwinism today. Jiang mourns the killing of Mongolian wolves, erecting a literary totem there after wolves are gone. An elegy for the wild comes to justify the growing of fangs amid the jungle of the socialist-capitalist market. Wolf totem becomes a phallic symbol for power. A Sino-Anglo-Euro morphing materializes in global cinema as A…
