INTRODUCTION: Over the past two decades, the prevalence of psychological distress and mental disorders among adolescents has markedly increased. This coincides with the advent and rapid adoption of social media, resulting in a proliferation of research examining time spent on social media and its relationship with mental health. However, to date, findings have been inconclusive. The active/passive model of social media behavior theorizes that "pa…
Associations between self-compassion and interpersonal behaviours among adolescents during Covid-19
The Coproduced Youth Priorities Project
BACKGROUND: New approaches to mental health and substance use prevention, that bridge research and diagnostic silos are urgently needed to address rising trends in mental illness amongst young people. Engaging diverse stakeholders, including young people, in setting research priorities could aid the development of innovative responses, enhance research and improve translation. While previous activities have identified priorities for Australian me…
Media representation of methamphetamine-related deaths
Certain characteristics in news stories about drug-related deaths elicit higher stigma towards the depicted person. Thus, improving how the media report and frame drug-related deaths represents an important avenue to reduce stigma towards people who use drugs and in turn foster public support for evidence-based drug policies
Perceived barriers to help‐seeking for people who use crystal methamphetamine
Cost-Utility Analysis of a School-Based Universal Program for the Prevention of Anxiety, Depression, and Substance Use
Adolescent behavioural intentions
Health4Life shows promise in influencing adolescent intentions across various MHBC areas, especially immediately after intervention. However, further investigation is needed to sustain these intention changes beyond short term to facilitate behaviour change
Longitudinal and self‐attributed change in alcohol use among young adults during the Covid ‐19 pandemic in Australia
Acceptability and feasibility of Strong & Deadly Futures, a culturally-inclusive alcohol and drug prevention program for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander secondary students
Although there are effective alcohol and drug prevention programs available for Australian secondary schools, no effective culturally-inclusive programs exist for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. To address this gap, we developed the Strong & Deadly Futures program for young people aged 12–14 years. The web-based program was developed with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous staff and students at four secondary…
K-12, college/university, and mass shootings
In a 2003 study, we examined five antecedents of school shootings - a history of rejection, acute rejection experience, history of psychological problems, fascination with death or violence, and fascination with guns. In three studies, the current project examined the role of these factors in 57 K-12 shootings, 24 college/university shootings, and 77 mass shootings that occurred since the original study. Over half of all shooters had a history of…
It’s the Content That Counts
(1) Background: More time spent on social media has been linked to increased alcohol use, with exposure to peer alcohol-related content on social media (content exposure) named as a critical factor in this relationship. Little is currently known about whether early content exposure may have lasting effects across adolescent development, or about the capacity of parental monitoring of social media use to interrupt these links. (2) Methods: These g…
Strong and Deadly Futures
School-based programs can effectively prevent substance use; however, systematic reviews and consultation with stakeholders identified a need for effective, culturally inclusive programs for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (hereafter Aboriginal) youth. This paper describes the development of Strong & Deadly Futures , a six-lesson, curriculum-aligned wellbeing and substance use prevention program that was designed for, and with, the Abori…
Stigma, discrimination and crystal methamphetamine (‘ice’)
Stigma and discrimination surrounding crystal methamphetamine use was common in this sample of Australian residents, with public stigma more prevalent than self-stigma. This highlights a need for stigma reduction initiatives. Given higher levels of knowledge were associated with less stigmatising attitudes, public education campaigns providing accurate, evidence-based information about crystal methamphetamine along with guidelines and support for…
Bidirectional relationships in the development of internalising symptoms and alcohol use in adolescence
Clustering of Six Key Risk Behaviors for Chronic Disease among Adolescent Females
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of disability and mortality globally. In Australia, females are at heightened risk. This research explored the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of six key risk behaviors (physical inactivity, poor diet, recreational screen time, inadequate sleep, alcohol use, and smoking) among adolescent females and whether knowledge of health guidelines was associated with adherence. Adolescent females completed an ano…
