Burden of cardiometabolic diseases and depression in a low-income, urban community in Pakistan
This study highlights the significant burden of CMDs, multimorbidity, and depression in a low-income urban community in Pakistan. The findings suggest that a cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) epidemic is emerging in urban Pakistan, emphasizing the need for integrated interventions addressing physical, mental, economic, and environmental factors in CMD management
Association Between Physical Activity During Pregnancy and Perinatal Depressive Symptoms in Pregnant Individuals With Overweight and Obesity
Social Mediators of the Association Between Depression and Falls Among Older Adults
The sample included data from 3443 older adults from three waves of the Health and Retirement Study (2010-2014). A Lifestyle Questionnaire was used to measure social engagement, social network contact, and neighborhood social context. Mediating effects of social factors were estimated through causal mediation analysis. Results: Poorer social engagement and network contact were associated with greater likelihood of falls, while poorer neighborhood…
Impact of a Large Healthy Start Program on Perinatal Outcomes, South Carolina, 2009–2019
Using linked birth and death certificates for participants served by a Healthy Start program in South Carolina and community controls, we found that the Healthy Start program contributed to significant improvements in prenatal care, breastfeeding initiation, and participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children and significant reductions in inadequate weight gain and large-for-gestational-age births. How…
The Influence of Religious Participation and Use of Traditional Medicine on Type 2 Diabetes Control in Urban Ghana
Depressive Symptoms Partially Mediate the Association of Frailty Phenotype Symptoms and Cognition for Females but Not Males
These results highlight the importance of identifying individuals with frailty and depressive symptoms to monitor and provide interventions to preserve cognitive function
Social networks, perceived social support, and HbA1c in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in urban Ghana
Although family and household members were identified as important sources of social support for diabetes management, the ways in which they influence HbA1c control among Ghanaians require further investigation. Future studies can examine whether changes in social support over time, social support satisfaction, or other dimensions of social relationships improve T2DM outcomes in countries like Ghana
Diabetes-Related Stigma and its Influence on Social Networks, Social Support, and HbA1c in Ghana
Individuals with T2DM who report high self-stigma may have lower social support, which can reduce their capacity for disease management. Additionally, larger social networks may be beneficial for individuals with T2DM in countries like Ghana, and interventions that expand network resources may facilitate diabetes control
Relative validity and reliability of an FFQ in youth with type 1 diabetes
Objective To evaluate the relative validity and reliability of the SEARCH FFQ that was modified from the Block Kids Questionnaire. Design Study participants completed the eighty-five-item FFQ twice plus three 24 h dietary recalls within one month. We estimated correlations between frequencies obtained from participants with the true usual intake for food groups and nutrients, using a two-part model for episodically consumed foods and measurement …
Longitudinal Association Between BMI at Diagnosis and HIV Disease Progression
Associations between family eating behaviours and body composition measures in peri-adolescents
Relative validity of an FFQ to estimate daily food and nutrient intakes for Chilean adults
Objective FFQ are commonly used to rank individuals by their food and nutrient intakes in large epidemiological studies. The purpose of the present study was to develop and validate an FFQ to rank individuals participating in an ongoing Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study in Chile. Design An FFQ and four 24 h dietary recalls were completed over 1 year. Pearson correlation coefficients, energy-adjusted and de-attenuated correl…
Analysis of hospital‐based emergency department visits for dental caries in the United States in 2008
The Affordable Care Act may reduce the proportion of self-pay visits for dental care. Medicaid expansion may not result in improved dental use among Medicaid patients unless dental services are covered and dental practitioners appropriately engaged
Occurrence of New Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Males After HIV Diagnosis
Association between body composition and conformity to the recommendations of Canada's Food Guide and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (Dash) diet in peri-adolescence
Objective The role of following the recommendations of Canada's Food Guide (CFG) and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on body composition in children is unknown. The present study assessed how conformity to the recommendations of these diets was associated with BMI, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist girth (WG), hip girth (HG) and risk of overweight in peri-adolescents. Design CFG and DASH indices…
Available energy from soft drinks
Objective To evaluate the relationship between energy available from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and total energy availability. Design Ecological study using food availability data from 1976 to 2007 from the database of the Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System. The average available total daily energy per capita (kJ (kcal)/d per capita) and percentage of energy from SSB (%E/d per capita) were calculated. A regression analysis…
Refinement and validation of an FFQ developed to estimate macro- and micronutrient intakes in a south Indian population
Objective Potential error sources in nutrient estimation with the FFQ include inaccurate or biased recall and overestimation or underestimation of intake due to too many or too few items on the FFQ, respectively. Here we report the refinement of an FFQ that overestimated nutrient intake and its validation against multiple 24 h recalls. Study design Data on 2527 participants in south India (Trivandrum) were available for the original FFQ (OFFQ) th…
Seasonal Variation in Leisure-time Physical Activity Among Canadians
Seasonality impacts physical activity patterns in Canada and varies across the provinces. This needs to be considered in physical activity programming
Percutaneous injuries among dental professionals in Washington State
Out of hospital percutaneous injuries are a substantial risk to dental health professionals in Washington State. Improved work practices and safer devices are needed to address this risk
Childhood obesity, prevalence and prevention
Childhood obesity has reached epidemic levels in developed countries. Twenty five percent of children in the US are overweight and 11% are obese. Overweight and obesity in childhood are known to have significant impact on both physical and psychological health. The mechanism of obesity development is not fully understood and it is believed to be a disorder with multiple causes. Environmental factors, lifestyle preferences, and cultural environmen…
Use of Preexisting Radiographs for Assessing Periodontal Disease in Epidemiologic Studies
Preexisting radiographs are feasible for use in epidemiologic studies and provide valid assessments of periodontal disease
