  • Robust Indicators of Residential Mobility Derived From Longitudinal Canadian Data to Examine Population Health Across the Life Course

    Open Access•Sarah M Mah, Emmalin Buajitti et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2025•Referências: 5

  • Risk of premature mortality due to smoking, alcohol use, obesity and physical activity varies by income

    Open Access•Laura C Rosella, Emmalin Buajitti•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2024

These findings highlight the need for targeted strategies to reduce health inequities and more careful attention to how policies and interventions are distributed at the population level. This includes targeting and tailoring resources to those in lower income groups who disproportionately experience premature mortality risk to prevent further widening health inequities

  • The association between total social exposure and incident multimorbidity

Open Access•Ingrid Giesinger, Emmalin Buajitti et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2024

These findings demonstrate the importance of considering the cumulative effects of multiple social determinants of health on multimorbidity

  • Geographic clustering of travel-acquired infections in Ontario, Canada, 2008–2020

Open Access•Vinyas Harish, Emmalin Buajitti et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

As the frequency of international travel increases, more individuals are at risk of travel-acquired infections (TAIs). In this ecological study of over 170,000 unique tests from Public Health Ontario’s laboratory, we reviewed all laboratory-reported cases of malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and enteric fever in Ontario, Canada between 2008–2020 to identify high-resolution geographical clusters for potential targeted pre-travel prevention. Smoothed s…

  • Clarifying rural‐urban disparities in alcohol‐related emergency department visits and hospitalizations in Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Erik Loewen Friesen, Winnie Yu et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2023

PURPOSE: Rates of alcohol-related harm are higher in rural versus urban Canada. This study characterized the spatial distribution and regional determinants of alcohol-related emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations in Ontario to better understand this rural-urban disparity. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional spatial analysis of rates of alcohol-related ED visits and hospitalizations by Ministry of Health subregion (n = 76) in Ontar…

  • The Economic and Long-Term Health Consequences of Canadian Covid-19 Lockdowns

    Kevin Bryan, Kevin A Bryan et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

To prevent exponential spread of COVID-19, many governments restricted economic activity through lockdowns. We model these restrictions as shocks to productivity by sector and trace total equilibrium effects across the economy using techniques from production network economics. We combine this economic model with an epidemiological model of income shocks to long-term health. On both long-run health and economic grounds, it is better to keep upstr…

  • Downstream health impacts of employment losses during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Emmalin Buajitti, Laura C Rosella et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2021•Referências: 34

  • Agreement between area- and individual-level income measures in a population-based cohort

Open Access•Emmalin Buajitti, Sabrina Chiodo et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2020

Socioeconomic status is an important determinant of health, the measurement of which is of great significance to population health research. However, individual-level socioeconomic factors are absent from much health administrative data, resulting in widespread use of area-level measures in their place. This study aims to clarify the role of individual- and area-level socioeconomic status in Ontario, Canada, through comparison of income measures.…

  • Characterising risk of homicide in a population-based cohort

    Open Access•Meghan O’Neill, Emmalin Buajitti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 31

BACKGROUND: Homicide is an extreme expression of violence that has attracted less attention from public health researchers and policy makers interested in prevention. The purpose of this study was to examine the socioeconomic gradient of homicide and to determine whether risk differs by immigration status. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using linked vital statistics, census and population data sets that included all deaths …

  • Association between the regional variation in premature mortality and immigration in Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Laura C Rosella, Kathy Kornas et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 40

The findings demonstrate that health region differences in premature mortality in Ontario are in part explained by individual-level effects associated with the health advantage of immigrants, as well as contextual area-level effects that are associated with regional differences in the immigrant population. These factors should be considered in addition to health system factors when looking at health region variation in premature deaths
