Colonial legacies and local visions
This study explores Uganda’s colonial history and its influences on representation in contemporary photojournalistic practices. Using both quantitative and qualitative analyses, this study examines 10 years of visual reportage ( N = 7987) by the Associated Press, Getty Images, and Agence France-Presse, comparing the news prioritizes and visual conventions of foreign photojournalists with Ugandan photojournalists. This study reveals the global new…
Identity, Diversity, and Semiotic Innovation in Contemporary Photojournalism
The social practice of photojournalism has been historically dominated by a Western male perspective, producing norms and standards of representation. An important dimension of this perspective is the esthetics, a primary resource for meaning-making that has been previously described as highly conventional and standardized. This study specifically focuses on the aesthetic dimensions of the Western male gaze and provides empirical evidence that st…
“@?”
Bylines have long been the standard practice of crediting news products to reporters, but visual journalists have had a more complicated history. Visual journalists’ authorship has historically been suppressed, due to photographers’ diminished role in newsrooms, the discourses devised to protect “objectivity,” and the institutionalized routines of video journalism. Little research has focused on the crediting practices of visual journalism in the…

Immunizing the Public Against AI-Generated Disinformation
Political deepfakes are considered detrimental to democracy by eroding public trust and distorting communication. Scholars have advocated for inoculation strategies to counter deepfakes, yet they have found that individuals’ partisan attitudes can undermine the effects of inoculation. Guided by inoculation theory and motivated reasoning theory, we conducted a 3 (Inoculation Mode: Passive vs. Active vs. No Inoculation) × 2 (Deepfake Attack: Pro-At…
Core Competencies for Students Entering Medical School
A socially accountable physician workforce must include disabled learners and providers. However, current Canadian Technical Standards (TS) for medical school admissions create barriers to their inclusion. These standards overlook advances in assistive technology, universal design, evolving inclusion practices, and legal protections. Replacing the TS required consensus, but traditional methods of achieving consensus on disability inclusion risk r…
Who Is Worthy of a Name? Identity, Naming, and Social Difference in News Images’ Captions
This study examined news images and captions published by The Associated Press ( N = 7,455) between 2018 and 2022 to ascertain whether names were more frequently included for certain groups of people. The analysis found that people depicted in the Global North are named far more frequently than in the Global South, and that sports, entertainment, and political images include names more often than news and feature images. These pervasive patterns …
Peering Down at the Junkie
Focusing on the 2018 special issue of TIME entitled “The Opioid Diaries,” this study examines the way drug users are visually framed through both an embodied image-making process and a constructed end product. Using a multimodal analysis, it argues that James Nachtwey’s images created a simplified view of addiction while inserting an asymmetrical power dynamic between the depicted subject and viewer. This study also examines how images can carry …
Determining the retrofit viability of Vancouver’s single-detached homes
The reduction in energy and emissions from the building sector can come from improved standards for new construction and retrofits to existing buildings. The retrofit viability for single-detached homes in Vancouver, Canada, is examined in terms of the key drivers and barriers involving economic and social forces. Local experts considered the likelihood of retrofits occurring to several archetypal dwellings that were synthesized from local buildi…
Integration of an energy– economy model with an urban energy model
A proliferation of energy models has been developed across disciplines to explore energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-reduction strategies in cities. Hybrid models are especially useful because they incorporate more dynamics to simulate realistic results informed by relevant high-level policy decisions and building-level factors. Spatial and aspatial energy models, however, are not often linked, which overlooks the spatial impact of energy …

High School Athletes’ Reports of Confirmation as a Function of Starting Status and Leader–Member Exchange
Previous research indicates that athletes report receiving disparate levels of confirmation, which is consequential given the psychological, emotional, and cognitive benefits of being confirmed. This article explains head coaches’ use of confirmation, which is comprised of accepting and challenging communication, as a function of athletes’ roles and leader–member exchange (LMX). LMX with head coaches, however, accounted for much larger portions o…

Energy and Environment
Energy and the environment are inextricably linked: all decisions concerning energy consumption and production have implications for the environment, and environmental policy can impinge on the exploitation of energy resources. In this paper a general agenda is identified for this field of research, based on the deliberations of the ESRC Working Group on Energy and the Environment between 1984 and 1987. The connection between energy and environme…

An Undergraduate Semiconductor Device Laboratory
A semiconductor device laboratory course is described which has been developed as a senior technical elective. The objectives of the course are to strengthen the experimental understanding of abstract solid-state parameters, to weight the overall curriculum somewhat less heavily in abstractions, and to provide background for more advanced experimental work either in graduate school or in industry
