Point-of-sale sugar-sweetened beverage warning posters v . control posters were associated with reductions in school store sugar-sweetened beverage purchases made by Guatemalan adolescents
Objective: We examined whether point-of-sale warning posters, compared with control posters, reduced Guatemalan adolescents’ purchases of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) at school stores. Design: We used a difference-in-differences approach (4-week baseline and 4-week treatment). Our primary analysis compared two schools assigned to an intervention warning poster to one school that displayed a control poster. Based on purchase transaction data, t…
Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022

What North American retail food environment indices miss in Guatemala
We evaluated the cross-context validity and equivalence of the US- and Canada-originated Retail Food Environment Index (RFEI) and modified RFEI (mRFEI) against a retail food environment dataset from the indigenous-majority city of Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala. The RFEI/mRFEI failed to identify 77% of retailers and misclassified the healthiness of 42% of the remaining retailers in Xela, inaccurately labeling the city a food swamp. The RFEI/mRF…

Iluma-nating
First paragraph: IQOS, the Philip Morris International (PMI) flagship heated tobacco product (HTP), is now available in 82 countries. According to PMI’s 2023 fourth-quarter results, IQOS has overtaken Marlboro on net revenues. Scant research is available on youth’s HTP perceptions, including in Guatemala. Among adolescents aged 16–19 years in England, Canada and the USA, susceptibility to trying IQOS has been found to be higher than for cigarette…

Achievements, challenges, priorities and needs to address the current tobacco epidemic in Latin America
Most Latin American countries have signed and ratified the FCTC, although implementation has been uneven. Countries across the region were relatively quick to adopt mandatory smoke-free workplace policies, but regional progress in other areas has been slower. In taxation, for example, Uruguay and Brazil have made considerable progress while Paraguay and Bolivia have relatively weak policies. More recently, the region is grappling with challenges …

Thoughts on neologisms and pleonasm in scientific discourse and tobacco control
As public health reckons with the implications of language, word choice and their impacts,1–3 so too does Tobacco Control . Indeed, the editor-in-chief in 2010 pointed to the power of language in bounding discussions in the field.4 A common parlance or agreed on set of terms is important for moving science (and policy) forward—comparing like to like, allowing for replication, facilitating review and synthesis, and translating science into action.…
Perceptions of chronic kidney disease among at-risk adults in rural Guatemala
This qualitative study explores perceptions of chronic kidney disease (CKD) among adults with abnormal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in Guatemala, where the burden of CKD is rising. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with 39 individuals screened for CKD and found to have abnormal eGFR (defined as 2 , per Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes [KDIGO] guidelines). Flavour capsule cigarettes continue to experience strong global growth
First paragraph: Cigarettes with flavour-changing capsules in the filter, a continuing success story for tobacco companies, have grown exponentially since being introduced in 2007. The global capsule market is estimated to be 150 billion sticks in 2017. We provide an update on the capsule market since 2014. From this time capsule cigarettes have been introduced in new markets in Europe (Croatia, Spain), Africa (Tunisia), Latin America (Bolivia, E…
