What mothers don't know and doctors don't say
The present study examined the detection of early developmental delays of high‐risk infants by first‐time mothers in a community sample of families ( N = 451). About half of the mothers were adolescents at time of childbirth, and two thirds reported household incomes below $20,000 annually. Children were assessed at 12 and 24 months of age on standardized measures of cognitive, language, adaptive, and socioemotional development. According to the …

Accessibility of Family Planning Services
Geographic Access to Family Planning Facilities and the Risk of Unintended and Teenage Pregnancy
Family Planning Services
Family planning services are necessary for the widespread adoption of preconception care for two reasons. First, preconception care is more likely if pregnancies are planned, and family planning services encourage pregnancy planning. Second, family planning services usually include counseling, and counseling provides an opportunity to discuss the advantages of preconception care. However, the potential of family planning services to promote preco…
Preconception Care Between Pregnancies
For more than two decades, prenatal care has been a cornerstone of our nation's strategy for improving pregnancy outcomes. In recent years, however, a growing recognition of the limits of prenatal care and the importance of maternal health before pregnancy has drawn increasing attention to preconception and internatal care. Internatal care refers to a package of healthcare and ancillary services provided to a woman and her family from the birth o…

The Extent of Pregnancy Mistiming and Its Association with Maternal Characteristics and Behaviors and Pregnancy Outcomes

Smoking reduction activities in a federal program to reduce infant mortality among high risk women
Although Healthy Start sites were aware of the importance of smoking cessation/reduction activities for their clients, they offered a limited range of services. These projects, and others with similar objectives serving similar populations, need a better understanding of the time and money such interventions require and greater belief in their effectiveness, along with more funds, staff training and materials, and office systems that promote coun…
The impact of short interpregnancy intervals on pregnancy outcomes in a low-income population
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine whether the length of the interval between pregnancies was associated with either preterm birth or intrauterine growth retardation in a low-income, largely Black population. METHODS: The study population consisted of 4400 women who had received prenatal care in county clinics and had two consecutive singleton births between 1980 and 1990. RESULTS: Interpregnancy intervals were positively as…

The relationship between adolescent parenthood and inadequate parenting
Nonfinancial Barriers to the Receipt of Medical Care
Much has been written about financial barriers to health care, but nonfinancial barriers also increase the risk of inadequate health care. Nonfinancial barriers-including legal restrictions, geographic isolation and provider shortages, provider practices and policies, and personal attributes and circumstances--can prevent individuals from obtaining care. Children, adolescents, and women needing family planning or obstetric services are especially…
National Problems, Local Solutions
This study identifies a number of factors associated with the successful development and maintenance of local comprehensive adolescent pregnancy programs in the US. The comprehensive programs were located in communities with relatively well-developed social welfare infrastructures. They received basic state support and were able to tap a wide variety of federal, state, and local resources. These comprehensive programs were managed by skillful adm…
Parental consent for abortion
This study assessed the impact of Massachusetts' parental consent law, which requires unmarried women under age 18 to obtain parental or judicial consent before having an abortion. Data were analyzed on monthly totals of abortions and births to Massachusetts minors prior to and following the April 1981 implementation of the law. Findings indicate that half as many minors obtained abortions in the state during the 20 months after the law went into…
Demographic and educational characteristics of inner city middle school problem absence students
Results of a study of characteristics of middle school students revealed highly significant differences between problem absence students and non-problem absence students on all study variables except sex. Characteristics such as increasing grade, being behind appropriate grade, busing and special education status, and the particular school attended were highly correlated with this behavior, as were race and increasing age
Teenage Parenthood
The literature reveals that teenage mothers have high rates of welfare dependence. Factors that lessen the longterm negative economic consequences of early motherhood include (1) deferment of marriage, (2) support from the family of origin, (3) increased education and career motivation, (4) decreased fertility, and (5) comprehensive programs for teenage mothers

Teenage parenting and child abuse
The relationship between teenage parenting and child abuse is examined in terms of three methodological problems that must be considered in assessing this relationship. Four data sets illustrative of the methodological difficulties are described. Results suggest that the hypothesized association between teenage pregnancy and child abuse may be confounded by the association of each variable with social class

Factors associated with rapid subsequent pregnancies among school-age mothers
The reproductive performance of school-age girls in 2 family planning programs is analyzed. The performance is related, after analysis, to 1) the characteristics of the programs, 2) certain preexisting characteristics of the participants, 3) the degree of their participation in 1 of the programs, and 4) other findings at 15 months postpartum. Of the 2 programs studied, the New Haven Young Mothers Program(YMP) provided medical services while the H…

Induced abortion and sterilization among women who became mothers as adolescents
Four cohorts of urban women who delivered a child before reaching age 18 were followed for periods ranging from 6 to 12 years to determine use of abortion and sterilization. The two more recent cohorts had been served by comprehensive service programs. About 40 per cent of each of teh groups used abortion or sterilization to control fertility. Most of the women seeking abortion had no subsequent term or near term deliveries, suggesting that such …

Coping with pregnancy resolution among never-married women
The Janis-Mann model of decision-making provides the theoretical orientation for empirical analyses of decisions to deliver or abort in matched samples of never-married women. Results focus on four variables: happiness about pregnancy; initial acceptance of delivery or abortion; ease of decision-making; and satisfaction with final choice. Path analyses summarize findings, which are discussed in terms of conflict resolution strategies
