Strategies for Presenting Research to Community Advisory Boards
Community-based participatory research emphasizes building collaborative, equitable partnerships between researchers and community experts. Community advisory boards (CABs) are integral to community-based participatory research. The University of California, Los Angles-Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Center for AIDS Research (UCLA-CDU CFAR)'s standing CAB consists of community experts, most with lived experience, across Los Ang…

Association of neighborhood gentrification and residential moves with hypertension and diabetes control in Los Angeles County, 2014–2019
Gentrification may support-or at least not harm-cardiometabolic health for some residents. City leaders and health systems could partner with impacted communities to ensure that neighborhood development meets the goals and health needs of all residents and does not exacerbate health disparities
Communities for Wellness Equity
Using CPPR to gain community members' insight about local factors that drive individual and community health is feasible and viewed by the community as socially responsible, suggesting it holds promise to address root causes of health inequality in under-resourced communities
Engaging Community Networks to Improve Depression Services
Maintaining Internal Validity in Community Partnered Participatory Research
Objective: With internal validity being a central goal of designed experiments, we seek to elucidate how community partnered participatory research (CPPR) impacts the internal validity of public health comparative-effectiveness research. Methods: Community Partners in Care (CPIC), a study comparing a community-coalition intervention to direct technical assistance for disseminating depression care to vulnerable populations, is used to illustrate …
Community Partnership in Precision Medicine

Participatory Technology Development to Enhance Community Resilience
This is the first study, to our knowledge, to demonstrate the feasibility of participatory technology development, an approach involving direct participation in the development, tailoring and maintenance of a mobile app by a broad set of stakeholders with high representation from racial/ethnic minorities from an under-resourced community. Participatory technology development is a promising approach for creating sustainable, relevant and engaging …
How can we help African American substance users stop smoking? client and agency perspectives
Research is needed to better understand barriers to smoking cessation and sustained abstinence among racial/ethnic minority polydrug users. We conducted community dialogue groups involving 49 clients in substance use treatment programs with predominantly ethnic minority clientele and individual dialogues/interviews with seven program providers (stakeholders). Most clients were African American, under 40 years old, women, current smokers, and high…
Housing choices in later life as unclaimed forms of housing activism
This paper explores how housing choices over a lifetime produce under-recognised and unclaimed forms of housing activism. It is based on qualitative interviews with two individuals in their sixties, living in intergenerational communities in the South of England. I argue that their stories of their housing choices and their future housing plans resist dominant housing discourses, particularly as they relate to ageing, and they illuminate a number…
Preserving Dignity in the Face of Hunger
Hunger in the United States has become commonplace. Food pantries are now regularly used by millions of people. Once thought to be used by the destitute, today they are frequented by families, students, the elderly people who hold full-time jobs, and people who thought they would never have to seek assistance to have enough to eat. Viewing food pantries as a major foodways resource, this study focuses on how a New England food pantry seeks to giv…
Integrating Community Expertise into the Academy

Improving Health Care for the Future Uninsured in Los Angeles County
Improving health care for the residually uninsured after ACA implementation will require addressing dissatisfaction in safety-net providers, disseminating knowledge and providing health care through trusted nontraditional sources, and using effective and trusted partnerships between community and health care agencies with mutual respect. Community-academic partnerships can be a trusted conduit to discuss issues related to the health care of vulne…
An Exploration of the Effect of Community Engagement in Research on Perceived Outcomes of Partnered Mental Health Services Projects
Mental health research projects address sensitive issues for vulnerable populations and are implemented in complex environments. Community-based participatory research approaches are recommended for health research on vulnerable populations, but little is known about how variation in participation affects outcomes of partnered research projects. We developed a conceptual model demonstrating the impact of community engagement in research on outcom…
