Role Perceptions of Teachers Concerning Student Mental Health in Higher Education
Student mental health is a relevant aspect of the current academic context due to concerns regarding escalating mental health issues and because of an increasingly holistic perspective on education, learning, and personal development. This research investigates the perceptions of teachers in higher education regarding their roles in promoting student mental health, explicitly focusing on teachers who hold a tutor position. After following a stric…
Exploring Tutors’ Roles in Supporting Student Mental Health
Student mental health is a challenging topic in higher education, with institutions aiming to develop policies and practices to support students’ personal and professional development. This study examined students’ expectations of their tutors regarding mental health support. An adaptation of the Mentor-Q questionnaire, focusing on tutor role perceptions, was used to measure student expectations. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of …
From diagnosis to dialogue – reconsidering the DSM as a conversation piece in mental health care
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, abbreviated as the DSM, is one of mental health care's most commonly used classification systems. While the DSM has been successful in establishing a shared language for researching and communicating about mental distress, it has its limitations as an empirical compass. In the transformation of mental health care towards a system that is centered around shared decision-making, person-cent…
The Development of an Oral Health Nursing Tool for Patients with a Psychotic Disorder
Patients with psychotic disorders frequently report oral health problems, while mental health nurses (MHNs) seem not to be fully aware of these problems and the risk factors. Therefore, this study aimed to develop supportive tools for MHNs regarding oral health to increase sensitisation among MHNs and provide MHNs with the knowledge to recognise (potential) oral health problems in patients with a psychotic disorder. We used a human-centred design…
Communicating diagnoses to individuals with a first episode psychosis
This study provides new insights into the experiences and specific information needed by individuals with a first episode of psychosis. Results suggest that individuals have different needs regarding the type of (what), how and when to receive information about diagnosis and treatment options. This requires a tailor-made process of communicating diagnosis. A guideline on when, how and what to inform, as well as providing personalized written info…
Self-stigma and cognitive insight in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis
Findings show that self-stigma was already present in the UHR phase, to a similar degree as in individuals with a diagnosis of a SSD, and is thus not dependent of previous experience of having a label of SSD. Cognitive insight in individuals at UHR of psychosis appears to be intact, but individuals at UHR showed more self-reflectiveness, and individuals at risk with high cognitive insight also experience high levels of self-stigma. Overall findin…
A Human-Centered Design Approach to Develop Oral Health Nursing Interventions in Patients with a Psychotic Disorder
In mental health, oral health is often given little attention. Mental health nurses (MHNs) are professionally the appropriate target group to support maintaining and increasing oral health. We aimed to develop and validate personas that reflect the attitudes and needs of MHNs regarding oral health in patients with a psychotic disorder. We used a human-centered design with contextual interviews (n = 10) to address the key issues of the problems an…
Empathy and Its Relationship With Social Functioning in Individuals at Ultra-High Risk for Psychosis
Introduction: Social functioning is often impaired in the ultra-high-risk (UHR) phase of psychosis. There is some evidence that empathy is also impaired in this phase and that these impairments may underlie difficulties in social functioning. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether cognitive and affective empathy are lower in people in the UHR phase of psychosis in comparison to healthy controls, and whether possible impairments hav…
