The Son of Man Debate Revisited (1960-2010)
In a lecture delivered in 1965 and published in 1967, I argued that the Greek expression 'son of man' in the Gospels represented an Aramaic phrase which in the context of a monologue or dialogue stood as an exclusive but veiled reference to the speaker. The published paper, based on examples collected mostly from Galilean rabbinic Aramaic texts, was followed by a substantial debate in which Maurice Casey and Barnabas Lindars introduced the idea o…

Historiographical Elements in the Qumran Writings
The historiographical elements discussed in this study concern: I. the use of the term Kittim in the War Scroll, the Book of War and the various biblical commentaries; and II. the use of Kittim in ancient Jewish literature outside Qumran. This is followed in III. by an analysis of Yavan in the Dead Sea Scrolls; and in IV. by an analysis of the Hebrew, Greek and Latin historical names and the surviving names of members of the Qumran Community. The…

New Light on the Sacrifice of Isaac from 4Q225
Le fragment de Qumran, 4Q225, issu de la grotte numero 4, comporte un recit similaire a celui concernant Abraham dans le livre des Jubiles. D'un point de vue paleographique, le fragment 4Q225 est date du tournant de l'ere chretienne (entre -30 et 20). Ce fragment jette une lumiere neuve sur le sacrifice d'Isaac. Il revele l'origine pre-chretienne de la representation midrashique-targumique du sacrifice d'Isaac
