The university academies
The University of Texas at Tyler University Academy (UA) serves as an innovative case study in applying Improvement Science within a K-12 educational setting. This research examines how the UA, operating across rural, urban, and suburban campuses, has embedded the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to drive continuous improvement in student and teacher outcomes. Using Stake’s Holistic Case Study Approach, the study explores the UA as both an intrinsi…
Braiding the Ropes
Drawing on second language acquisition theories and existing visuals, this article proposes a new educational metaphor, Lane’s L2+ Acquisition Rope, to encompass the complexities of second or additional language learning. This metaphor integrates five major strands—external factors, social factors, affective factors, innate factors, and internal factors—to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding proficient second language acquisition.…

Organizer’s Preface
Organizer’s Preface Teresa Kennedy What a delight to be able to recall the events of our conference in honor of Giuseppe Mazzotta, a symposium that brought together so many colleagues, students and friends of one of the most brilliant scholars of our day. Envisioned by several colleagues as a literal conversation among friends, this conference was the result of the collaboration of many: Brenda Deen Schildgen, who enthusiastically participated in…
Language Learning and Its Impact on the Brain
Cognitive sciences are discovering many things that educators have always intuitively known about language learning. However, the important point is actively using this new information to improve both student learning and current teaching practices. The implications of neuroscience for educational reform regarding second language (L2) learning can clearly be seen in the following categories: brain structures and the corpus callosum; neuronal deve…
The FLES Attitudinal Inventory
This study investigated attitudinal changes experienced by elementary students studying a second language and presents the development of an attitudinal assessment instrument, its reliability, and a summary of findings from initial administrations of the inventory. The primary purpose of this study was to compare attitudinal differences between elementary students (K‐5) involved in a regular Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES) progr…
A Content-Based, Hands-On Program
This model shows how a university and school district combine efforts to create a Spanish enrichment program designed to stimulate academic interest in elementary-age children and to provide preservice teachers with additional foreign language teaching experience. Rather than focusing on textbook-based instruction, this model offers content-based courses intended to engage students in hands-on experiences. It takes into consideration the concerns…
