Exploring the images of hospitality line-level employment
The study explores, compares, and contrasts the image of line-level hotel employment and its underlying dimensions as held by the general public and by hotel employees. Additionally, this study clarifies the images of six specific line-level occupations. A quantitative research approach was adopted. The analysis included 302 hospitality employees and 273 participants representing the general public. The findings revealed that the image of line-le…
The positive role of negative emotions in heritage-site visits
This exploratory qualitative study focuses on two issues: (1) an examination of the emotions that participants expect to feel when visiting a heritage site presenting death and atrocities; and (2) the emotions they feel during the visit. The study is based on 43 semi-structured interviews with participants from Israel, Poland, and Germany. The findings revealed the centrality of negative emotions that emerge at a heritage site, and the co-existen…
The joy of riding or walk of shame? The theme park experience of obese people
This exploratory study focuses on obese people’s perceptions of their theme park experience. Given this study’s objective and the gap in the literature on obese people’s tourist experience, a qualitative research approach was adopted. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted. Participants revealed that their theme park experiences included a strong sense of humiliation. This is clearly associated with the interaction between their body,…
The effects of early auditory-based intervention on adult bilateral cochlear implant outcomes
Although both auditory-verbal and auditory-oral approaches emphasize spoken language development, they emphasize auditory development to different degrees. This may affect cochlear implant (CI) outcomes. Further consideration should be made in future auditory research to determine whether these differences contribute to performance outcomes. Additional investigation with a larger participant pool, controlled for effects of age and CI devices and …
Scuba divers
The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to gain insight into the motives, perceptions and behaviours of adventure tourists engaged in scuba diving, with the intent of revealing the nature of the experience sought by these tourists. Specifically, we examined whether there is a balance between the thrill of risk vs. the search for total relaxation and tranquility. In-depth interviews with scuba divers indicated that scuba diving repre…
Tourists perceptions of World Heritage Site and its designation
World Heritage Site—Is It an Effective Brand Name?
Is the designation World Heritage Site (WHS) effective? Does it yield high net brand equity? The five research objectives in the present study seek to explore awareness of the designation/logo, the meanings attached to the designation, the effects of the designation on tourists’ intended future behaviors, the relationship between number of WHSs and a country’s image, and the relationship between perception of a site as part of the world heritage …
World Heritage Site
This study examines whether branding archeological sites as World Heritage Sites (WHSs) will affect potential demand patterns. The study's research objectives are (1) to explore awareness of potential visitors to the brand and logo of WHS; (2) to investigate the effects of the designation on tourists' future behaviors; (3) to clarify whether the number of sites designated (3 versus 10) has an effect on future visitation patterns; and (4) to revea…
An exploratory inquiry into destination risk perceptions and risk reduction strategies of first time vs. repeat visitors to a highly volatile destination
Visitors' Preferences for Interpretation at Heritage Sites
Research on interpretation at heritage settings commonly centers on the display. The current study highlights visitor preferences for on-site interpretation, an essential element in the management of heritage tourist attractions. This research focuses on the Wailing Wall, a religious “must-see” attraction in Jerusalem. The role of interpretation as a facilitator of emotional experience rather than a means to gain knowledge is explored. Results in…
People with disabilities visit art museums
Visits to art museums are a major component of culture and heritage tourism. This study focuses on the obstacles that Israelis with disabilities – 30 people who use wheelchairs or crutches and 15 visually impaired people – face while visiting art museums. The in-depth interviews revealed that people with disabilities are not able to experience the museum as they wish, despite museum efforts toward becoming accessible to all. Participants emphasiz…
Israeli Backpackers
Perceived Risk and the Non-Institutionalized Tourist Role
While backpacking is often associated with a propensity for risk-taking, the literature lacks quantitative analyses of backpackers' perceived risk. The current study attempts to fill this gap by exploring risk perceptions of 579 Israeli students who were backpackers. The study findings indicate that perceived risk of the backpackers' experience is a multidimensional phenomenon, which includes factors of risk similar to those mentioned in both the…
Heritage Site Perceptions and Motivations to Visit
The present study has two main objectives: (1) to further explore the motivations of potential visitors to a heritage site, and (2) to explore whether the relationships among the tourists’ perceptions of the site relative to their own heritage are related to their motivations for the visit. The sample is composed of potential visitors to Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. The results reveal the existence of motives often ignored in previous studies, …
Tourist Perceptions
Recently, attempts have been made to clarify tourist behaviour related to heritage settings by highlighting the importance of the perception of the site. In this study, possible links between visitors' perception of a site as part of their own heritage and their classifications of the heritage presented according to spatial scale (as being local, national or world heritage) were examined. The study was conducted at Anne Frank House in Amsterdam a…

Volunteering in Tourism
This article provides a conceptual discussion regarding the phenomenon in which volunteer activity and tourism are intertwined. First, it is suggested that the phenomenon of volunteering in tourism could be grasped as an expression of the so called “other” postmodern tourism. Second, it is argued that the notion of volunteering in tourism needs to be expanded beyond volunteering guests and include hosts who volunteer in the local tourism industry…
Heritage Proximity and Resident Attitudes Toward Tourism Development
Rescuing Hikers in Israel's Deserts
This study focuses on the motivation and attitudes of volunteers taking part in rescue activity in Israeli desert areas. In line with contemporary literature on postmodernism, it is argued that they exemplify a particular case of horizontal de-differentiation in which volunteer rescue activity is intertwined with leisure and tourism. Specifically, we suggest that in addition to an altruistic sense of good citizenship, these rescuers are motivated…

The Impact Of Tourism On Ethnic Attitudes
This study evaluated the role of tourism as an agent of change between two countries that have been traditionally unfriendly or hostile to each other, namely Israel and Egypt. A sample of 82 Jewish-Israeli tourists who traveled to Egypt for the first time was asked to complete a structured questionnaire that measured attitudes toward Egyptian people, their political beliefs, and their institutions. Each tourist was asked to complete the question …

Achievement Motivation Factors and Students' College Outcomes
The present study develops new measures of students' achievement motivation and examines the relationships between these measures and indicators of students' behavioral and college outcomes. Analysis yields moderate positive association of most aspects of achievement motivation with college outcomes. These relationships are quite strong for students' accomplishment and grades and weaker for commitment, assessment, and involvement. The best correl…
