Waterpipe smoking and health outcomes
The prevalence of waterpipe smoking (WPS) is increasingly recognised as a growing global public health concern. Available studies show that WPS exposes users to toxicants at levels similar to or higher than those in cigarette smoke, contributing to respiratory disease, cardiovascular damage and cancer. The WHO has flagged WPS as a growing threat, especially among adolescents and young adults, where use is rapidly increasing. Yet research progress…
Association of individual and community-level socioeconomic status and education with medication use
Higher education was associated with lower medication use, whereas living in more educated communities was linked to higher usage. Although the association between individual SES and medication use was relatively weak, residing in middle-SES communities was associated with lower medication usage. These findings show the importance of addressing community-level factors in health research and policymaking
Persian cohort biobank
Biobanks are essential for advancing biomedical research by providing access to high-quality biological specimens and associated data. In the Middle East, large-scale biorepositories are limited, hindering regional epidemiological and genetic studies. The PERSIAN Cohort Study Biobank was established to address this gap and support diverse research initiatives in Iran. The Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran (PERSIAN), established…
Global burden of 288 causes of death and life expectancy decomposition in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, 1990–2021
BACKGROUND: Regular, detailed reporting on population health by underlying cause of death is fundamental for public health decision making. Cause-specific estimates of mortality and the subsequent effects on life expectancy worldwide are valuable metrics to gauge progress in reducing mortality rates. These estimates are particularly important following large-scale mortality spikes, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. When systematically analysed, mort…

Socioeconomic inequalities in prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension
The prevalence of HTN was higher among low-SES individuals, who also showed higher levels of awareness. However, treatment and control of HTN were more concentrated among those who had higher levels of SES, indicating that people at a higher risk of adverse event related to HTN (the low SES individuals) are not benefiting from the advantage of treatment and control of HTN. Such a gap between diagnosis (prevalence) and control (treatment and contr…
