  • Exploring Differences in Dietary Diversity and Micronutrient Adequacy between Costa Rican and Mexican Adolescents

    Open Access•Rafael Monge-Rojas, Rulamán Vargas-Quesada et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Diet diversity becomes especially relevant during adolescence to satisfy the adequate micronutrient intake. Diet diversity (DD) and micronutrient probability of adequacy (PA) were studied in 818 Costa Rican (CR) and 1202 Mexican (MX) adolescents aged 13-18 years. DD was compared using the Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) score. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to identify the optimal MDD for each sample from the respect…

  • Nutrient composition of mealtimes and its association with the energy intake of subsequent meals among Mexican adults

  • Global burden of 87 risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019

    Open Access•Christopher J L Murray, Aleksandr Y Aravkin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Rigorous analysis of levels and trends in exposure to leading risk factors and quantification of their effect on human health are important to identify where public health is making progress and in which cases current efforts are inadequate. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a standardised and comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of risk factor exposure, relative risk, and attribu…

  • Health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries, 1990–2017

Open Access•Ashkan Afshin, Patrick John Sur et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2019

BACKGROUND: Suboptimal diet is an important preventable risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs); however, its impact on the burden of NCDs has not been systematically evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the consumption of major foods and nutrients across 195 countries and to quantify the impact of their suboptimal intake on NCD mortality and morbidity. METHODS: By use of a comparative risk assessment approach, we estimated the propor…

  • Fortification of bakery and corn masa–based foods in Mexico and dietary intake of folic acid and folate in Mexican national survey data

    Open Access•Manuela A Orjuela, 日本数学協会 日本数学協会 et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Entomology and Zoology•2019•Referências: 45

Unregulated FA fortification of dietary staples leads to unpredictable total folate intake without adequately impacting the intended target. Our findings suggest that monitoring, evaluation, and enforcement of mandatory fortification policies are needed. Without these, alternate strategies may be needed in order to reach women of childbearing age while avoiding overexposing children.

  • Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017

    Open Access•Jeffrey D Stanaway, Ashkan Afshin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2018

BackgroundThe Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associatio…

  • Energy contribution of Nova food groups and sociodemographic determinants of ultra-processed food consumption in the Mexican population

    Open Access•Joaquín Alejandro Marrón-Ponce, Tania G Sanchez-Pimienta et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2018

Objective To identify the energy contributions of NOVA food groups in the Mexican diet and the associations between individual sociodemographic characteristics and the energy contribution of ultra-processed foods (UPF). Design We classified foods and beverages reported in a 24 h recall according to the NOVA food framework into: (i) unprocessed or minimally processed foods; (ii) processed culinary ingredients; (iii) processed foods; and (iv) UPF. …

  • Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990–2016

Open Access•Emmanuela Gakidou, Ashkan Afshin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) provides a comprehensive assessment of risk factor exposure and attributable burden of disease. By providing estimates over a long time series, this study can monitor risk exposure trends critical to health surveillance and inform policy debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. METHODS: We used the comparative risk assessment framework dev…

  • Adapting the standardised computer- and interview-based 24 h dietary recall method (GloboDiet) for dietary monitoring in Latin America

    Open Access•Silvia Bel-Serrat, Viktoria Knaze et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective The present study describes the procedure and approaches needed to adapt and harmonise the GloboDiet methodology, a computer- and interview-based 24 h dietary recall, for use in two Latin American pilot countries, Brazil and Mexico. Design About seventy common and country-specific databases on foods, recipes, dietary supplements, quantification methods and coefficients were customised and translated following standardised guidelines, st…

  • Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990–2015

    Open Access•Mohammad H Forouzanfar, Ashkan Afshin et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2016

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. METHODS: We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of t…
