Experiential Shifts in Psychotherapy Through Metaphor Use
The management of Covid-19 in prisons – the case of Northern Ireland
An Islander’s notes
Lazarus is a Cuban street musician living in Athens, Greece. This article tracks both his life history and his encounter with the author who was researching busking in the city. It is a study at the confluence of art and anthropology, an exploration of ethno-biography as a mode of representation, and a reflection on ethnographic fieldwork
Developmental Osteology of Cross-bred Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus L. 1758) and the Implications for Ageing Chickens from Archaeological Sites
We document the developmental osteology of a captive population of cross-bred red junglefowl (Gallus gallus L. 1758) that were slaughtered at known ages from 6 days old until they reached maturity and explore the relationships that exist between bone size, maturity, body weight and sex. In doing so, we contribute to the body of knowledge concerning developmental osteology in domestic fowl, which has previously focussed upon 'improved' breeds. Com…
The digital divide: The special case of gender
This paper examines the evidence for the digital divide based on gender. An overview of research published in the last 20 years draws to the conclusion that females are at a disadvantage relative to men when learning about computers or learning other material with the aid of computer‐assisted software. The evidence shows that the digital divide affects people of all ages and across international boundaries. We suggest that the digital divide is f…
Some early collectors and collections of fossil sponges represented in The Natural History Museum, London
Fossil sponges have a long geological history dating to the late Precambrian, yet they are poorly understood both palaeobiologically and taxonomically. In part the latter is due to problems with preservation but further contributory factors are the number of key papers that date from the 19th Century, and the intrinsic problems in tracing, reidentifying and locating original data associated with the specimens used in these publications. The large…
Does a needs‐led delivery of services undermine disability discrimination principles
In this article we contrast the use of a needs‐led approach to the provision of care services with one based on a right not to suffer discrimination. We demonstrate how a needs‐led approach must inevitably be constrained by budgetary considerations and can therefore never be absolute. This is turn will lead to situations in which people are left out of provision, which raises the question: Have they suffered discrimination? But non‐discrimination…

Violence, racial harassment and council tenants: Reflections on the limits of the disputing process
This paper outlines a recently completed study of racial harassment on council estates in an area of East London. The study is based on a wide ranging assessment of the effectiveness of anti‐harassment procedures operating in the London borough of Newham, a borough in the forefront of innovation in anti‐racism procedures in both the public and the private housing sector. The centrepiece of the study is an analysis of the experiences of a group of…
The Garo of Bangladesh: A forest people's struggle to survive
This article examines the plight of the Garo tribal people in Bangladesh as they struggle to retain the integrity of their homeland in the Madhupur Forest. Drawing from a number of sources - jurisprudential, ethnographic, and sociological - the author describes the history of this people, and the slow erosion of their customs and cultural homogeneity that has taken place over the past hundred years, as they have battled to survive in the centre o…

From Casework to Community Care: The End is Where We Start From' (T. S. Eliot)
This paper traces some of the influences which have shaped social work in Britain between the 1960s and the 1980s, with particular reference to the casework inheritance and the community dimension. The latter is illustrated by reference to the Home Office Community Development Projects of the late sixties and by moves throughout the period towards a community care policy in the mental health field. It is suggested that community care revives an o…

General introduction
Undeniably the first half of the seventeenth century in Europe (or for that matter in China and to a lesser extent India) was an eventful period, full of conflicts. In China a dynasty collapsed amidst peasant revolts and for the last time nomadic invaders conquered the settled lands. In Europe there were more widespread and prolonged wars than ever before, the assassination of one king and the execution of another, while revolts of whole kingdoms…
