Drivers of the reduction in childhood diarrhea mortality 1980-2015 and interventions to eliminate preventable diarrhea deaths by 2030
BACKGROUND: Childhood diarrhea deaths have declined more than 80% from 1980 to 2015, in spite of an increase in the number of children in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Possible drivers of this remarkable accomplishment can guide the further reduction of the half million annual child deaths from diarrhea that still occur. METHODS: We used the Lives Saved Tool, which models effects on mortality due to changes in coverage of preventive or…
Evolution of the World Health Organization’s programmatic actions to control diarrheal diseases
The Program for the Control of Diarrheal Diseases (CDD) of the World Health Organization (WHO) was created in 1978, the year the Health for All Strategy was launched at the Alma Ata International Conference on Primary Health Care. CDD quickly became one of the pillars of this strategy, with its primary goal of reducing diarrhea-associated mortality among infants and young children in developing countries. WHO expanded the previous cholera-focused…
Adequacy of child anthropometric indicators for measuring nutritional stress at population level
Objective To compare the responsiveness of different anthropometric indicators for measuring nutritional stress among children in developing countries. Design Growth was studied within 6-month intervals in a rural Senegalese community during one dry and two rainy (hungry) seasons. Responsiveness was defined as the change divided by the standard deviation of each anthropometric indicator. Contrast was defined as the difference in responsiveness be…
Mid‐upper arm circumference and weight‐for‐height to identify high‐risk malnourished under‐five children
The World Health Organization and UNICEF define non‐oedematous severe acute malnutrition (SAM) either by a mid‐upper arm circumference (MUAC) less than 115 mm or by a weight‐for‐height z‐score (WHZ) less than –3. The objective of this study was to assess whether there was any benefit to identify malnourished children with a high risk of death to combine these two diagnostic criteria. Data of a longitudinal study examining the relationship between…
Incidence and duration of severe wasting in two African populations
Objective The present study aimed to compare two situations of endemic malnutrition among Design Secondary analysis of longitudinal studies, conducted several years ago, which allowed incidence and duration to be calculated from transition rates. The first site was Niakhar in Senegal, an area under demographic surveillance, where we followed a cohort of children in 1983–5. The second site was Bwamanda in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where we…
L'esprit connexionniste
