Open Access•Anuj Kumar Pandey, Anju Pradhan Sinha et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Purpose: The PRAYAS Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis (IPD-MA) database aims to estimate the prevalence of anemia among children under 18 years, non-pregnant and non-lactating (NPNL) women, and pregnant women (by trimester), with further stratification by age group, year, and region of India. Beyond prevalence, it seeks to address the etiological contribution of iron and other erythropoietic micronutrient deficiencies and to evaluate the effe…

  • Development and validation of a novel clinical risk score to predict hypoxaemia in children with pneumonia using the WHO PREPARE dataset

Open Access•Rainer Tan, Arjun Chandna et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

BACKGROUND: Hypoxaemia predicts mortality at all levels of care, and appropriate management can reduce preventable deaths. However, pulse oximetry and oxygen therapy remain inaccessible in many primary care health facilities. We aimed to develop and validate a simple risk score comprising commonly evaluated clinical features to predict hypoxaemia in 2-59-month-old children with pneumonia. METHODS: Data from seven studies conducted in five countri…

  • Diagnostic performance of red cell indices in detecting iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia among rural adolescent girls aged 14–19 years in Nagpur District

    Open Access•Varsha S Dhurde, Archana B Patel et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) remains a major public health concern among adolescent girls in rural areas. This study assessed the diagnostic performance of red cell distribution width (RDW) and hemoglobin (Hb) in detecting IDA. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 221 healthy rural adolescent girls (14–19 years) randomly selected from 24 government schools across 18 villages under four primary health centers in Nagpur district, Maharashtra…

  • Providing optimal care in the neonatal care units in India

Open Access•Lisa J Messersmith, Cherryl Kolhe et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Nearly one quarter (600,000) of all neonatal deaths worldwide per year occur in India. To reduce neonatal mortality, the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare established neonatal care units, including neonatal intensive care units and specialized neonatal care units to provide immediate care at birth, resuscitation for asphyxiation, postnatal care, follow up for high-risk newborns, immunization, and referral for additional or complex heal…

  • Assessing compliance with national guidelines in diabetes care

    Open Access•Alana T Brennan, Emma M Kileel et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Diabetes is a major global health issue. We evaluated compliance to laboratory-based management guidelines for diabetes (type 1 and 2), essential for effective treatment and reducing diabetes-related morbidity and mortality. Our study utilized South Africa’s National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) data, focusing on patients from birth to age 80 years who underwent initial diabetes laboratory testing between January 1, 2012-January 1, 2016. Pat…

  • The prevalence of anemia during pregnancy and its correlates vary by trimester and hemoglobin assessment method in Eastern Maharashtra, India

Open Access•Lindsey M Locks, Shilpa Bhaise et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2024

Approximately half of pregnant women in India are anemic, representing over 7.5 million women. Few studies have assessed the relationship between multiple micronutrient deficiencies and anemia during pregnancy or the trajectory of hemoglobin (Hb) during pregnancy in low-resource settings. We enrolled 200 pregnant women from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Maharashtra, Indi…

  • Anaemia prevalence, its determinants and profile of micronutrient status among rural school adolescent girls aged 14–19 years

    Open Access•Varsha S Dhurde, Archana B Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2024

Objective: The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of anaemia among 14–19 years school going girls, risk factors for it and profile of micronutrient status among rural girls from western state of India. Design: Using a cross-sectional design, we obtained information on socio-demography, menstruation, dietary habits, knowledge and daily consumption of the government recommended iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets, and anthropometr…

  • Risk factors for community-acquired bacterial infection among young infants in South Asia

Open Access•Nicholas E Connor, Mohammad Shahidul Islam et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

OBJECTIVE: Risk factors predisposing infants to community-acquired bacterial infections during the first 2 months of life are poorly understood in South Asia. Identifying risk factors for infection could lead to improved preventive measures and antibiotic stewardship. METHODS: Five sites in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan enrolled mother-child pairs via population-based pregnancy surveillance by community health workers. Medical, sociodemographic …

  • Derivation and validation of a novel risk assessment tool to identify children aged 2–59 months at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality in 20 countries

Open Access•Chris A Rees, Trevor Colbourn et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

INTRODUCTION: Existing risk assessment tools to identify children at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality have shown suboptimal discriminatory value during external validation. Our objective was to derive and validate a novel risk assessment tool to identify children aged 2-59 months at risk of hospitalised pneumonia-related mortality across various settings. METHODS: We used primary, baseline, patient-level data from 11 studies, incl…

  • Assembling a global database of child pneumonia studies to inform WHO pneumonia management algorithm

    Open Access•Helena Martin, H Martı́n et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2022

Background: The existing World Health Organization (WHO) pneumonia case management guidelines rely on clinical symptoms and signs for identifying, classifying, and treating pneumonia in children up to 5 years old. We aimed to collate an individual patient-level data set from large, high-quality pre-existing studies on pneumonia in children to identify a set of signs and symptoms with greater validity in the diagnosis, prognosis, and possible trea…

  • Seasonal trends and maternal characteristics as predictors of maternal undernutrition and low birthweight in Eastern Maharashtra, India

Open Access•Lindsey M Locks, Archana Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2020

Few studies have assessed whether women and infants in rural and peri-urban communities in South Asia experience seasonal fluctuations in nutritional status; however, a handful of studies have documented seasonal variability in risk factors for undernutrition including food availability, physical activity and infections. We used data from the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) registry, a population-based pregnancy and birth registry in Eastern Ma…

  • Assessing the Respiratory Effects of Air Pollution from Biomass Cookstoves on Pregnant Women in Rural India

Open Access•Raj Parikh, Sowmya R Rao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Increased FeNO levels and higher dyspnea scores in biomass-fuel-exposed subjects confirm the adverse respiratory effects of this exposure during pregnancy. More so, FeNO may be a useful, noninvasive biomarker of inflammation that can help better understand the physiologic effects of biomass smoke on pregnant women. In the future, larger studies are needed to characterize the utility of FeNO in a population exposed to HAP

  • Does distance from a clinic and poverty impact visit adherence for noncommunicable diseases? A retrospective cohort study using electronic medical records in rural Haiti

    Open Access•Lily D Yan, Dufens Pierre-Louis et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Visit adherence was low in this sample of adult patients presenting to a NCD Clinic in Haiti. Multidimensional poverty and distance from clinic were not associated with visit adherence measures among patients seen in the clinic, except for visit in the last quarter. Future research should focus on identifying and addressing barriers to visit adherence
