  • History of Linguistic Thought in the Early Middle Ages

Vivien Law, Vivien A Law•BOOK•History of linguistic thought in…•1993

Surveys of linguistics in the Middle Ages often begin with the twelfth century, dismissing the preceding six centuries as 'devoid of originality' or 'dependent upon Donatus and Priscian'. This collection of articles devoted to linguistics in the early Middle Ages attempts to redress the balance by presenting a variety of approaches to new and controversial questions. The volume opens with a study of the historiography of early medieval grammar, w…

  • Anglo-saxon England

    Open Access•Vivien Law•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•1987•Citada por: 4

L'Angleterre est l'un des premiers pays européens à développer un usage littéraire de son vernaculaire. Pourtant c'est l'étude du latin qui domina la formation de la tradition grammaticale anglo-saxonne. La célèbre grammaire de Aelfric (10e siècle), est une grammaire du latin - les Excerptiones de Prisciano - traduite dans le vernaculaire. Nous n'y trouverons donc pas une description du vieil anglais, les formes vernaculaires qui accompagnent les…

  • When is Donatus not Donatus? Versions, variants and new texts

    Vivien Law•ARTICLE•Peritia•1986

Distinguishing interpolated versions of Donatus’s Ars minor from seventh- and eighth-century grammars based on it is a problem which occasionally obscures aspects of the history of the transmission of the Ars minor as recently traced by Louis Holtz. Crucial for the distinction is the qualitative difference between simple interpolations and the expansions which characterise an independent work: deliberate alterations to wording and structure and t…

  • Late latin grammars in the early middle ages

    Vivien Law•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1986•Citada por: 5

The popularity, and hence survival, of certain of the grammars of late Antiquity in the early Middle Ages can to a large extent be described in typological terms. The two principal ancient genres, the Schulgrammatik and the regulae type, were joined in the fifth century by a new genre, the grammatical commentary. The overwhelming importance of Donatus and commentaries on Donatus and the emergence of the elementary foreign-language grammar in the …

  • The study of Latin grammar in eighth-century Southumbria

    Open Access•Vivien Law•ARTICLE•Anglo-Saxon England•1983•Citada por: 2•Referências: 12

Insular Latinity – its origins, characteristics, affiliations and dissemination – has attracted much attention in the last decade. One area which has benefited from this increased interest is the investigation of the Latin grammars written by Insular scholars: consider, for example, the editions of Insular grammatical writings recently published in the Corpus Christianorum Series Latina. But it is noteworthy that the Anglo-Latin grammarians have …

  • The Latin and Old English glosses in the ars Tatuini

    Open Access•Vivien Law•ARTICLE•Anglo-Saxon England•1977•Citada por: 1•Referências: 2

The practice of the late classical grammarians of providing copious lists of frequently archaic and obscure examples of the parts of speech was subjected to varying treatment at the hands of their medieval adapters. Some omitted these lists altogether; some substituted commoner examples current in ecclesiastical vocabulary; others incorporated the classical material almost unaltered into their own works. The ars grammatica Tatuini , a lengthy tre…
