Effect of the 2012 US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations on Prostate-Specific Antigen Screening in a Medicare Advantage Population
BACKGROUND: In 2012, the US Preventive Service Task Force revised its recommendations for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening from "insufficient evidence" to "do not recommend" for men aged 70-74 while maintaining "do not recommend" for men aged 75+. METHODS: Using the difference-in-difference approach, we evaluated whether the rate of change in the use of low-value PSA screening differed between the control group (men aged 75+, N=7,856,204…
Screening for Colorectal Cancer
Importance Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death for both men and women, with an estimated 52 980 persons in the US projected to die of colorectal cancer in 2021. Colorectal cancer is most frequently diagnosed among persons aged 65 to 74 years. It is estimated that 10.5% of new colorectal cancer cases occur in persons younger than 50 years. Incidence of colorectal cancer (specifically adenocarcinoma) in adults aged 40 to 49…
How Should the Epidemiology of Acute Hepatitis C and Opioid Use Affect Health Policy Decision-Making
An editorial is presented which addresses the author's views about the potential impact that the epidemiology of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) and opioid use might have on health policy decision-making in America as of 2018, and it mentions the article Estimating Future Hepatitis C Morbidity, Mortality, and Costs in the United States by J.B. Wong and others which appears in a 2000 issue of the journal. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre…
Can Economic Model Transparency Improve Provider Interpretation of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis? A Response
To enhance the credibility and the value of health economic analyses, we argue that the computer model source code underlying these analyses should be made publicly available. Only with open publication is it possible for others to assess whether alternative assumptions, beyond those examined by the model authors, alter the model’s findings. Because reproducibility is critical for scientific acceptance and because computation increasingly permeat…
A Systematic Review of Stakeholder Engagement in Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
We Make the Path by Walking It”
ADAPT recognizes that long term sustainability requires bringing multiple stakeholders to the table even before a funding opportunity is released and attempting to build a diversified funding base
Calcium intake and hip fracture risk in men and women
A Survey of Current Problems in Meta-Analysis
The United States Agency for Health Care Policy and Research brought together representatives from each of the Patient Outcomes Research Teams (PORTs) as the Inter-PORT Meta-Analysis Work Group. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a wide range of problems the panel had encountered in the area of meta-analysis. Several actual problems were presented, and tentative solutions to those problems were given. The PORTs had to consider issues such …
Toward a Peer Review Process for Medical Decision Analysis Models
This paper presents a framework for a peer review process for medical decision analysis models. This framework is based on the collective experience of the members of the Inter-PORT Decision Modeling work group, a team of decision analysis experts comprising members from each of the Patient Outcomes Research Teams (PORTs), sponsored by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Important general principles of correct model structure include …
