Changes in mental health problems and access to mental health care among US adolescents before and during the Covid-19 pandemic
We found the prevalence of mental health problems in adolescents increased while the prevalence of access to mental health care decreased from 2019 to 2022, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend should be closely monitored. And special efforts are needed to help those adolescents who are affected
Patterns and Factors Associated With Alcohol Misuse Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men in New York City
Alcohol misuse is a significant health concern among gay, bisexual, same-gender-loving, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Yet, little is known about the severity and predictors of alcohol misuse among self-reported young Black MSM. This study aimed to identify patterns of and factors associated with alcohol misuse in a sample of young Black MSM living in New York City. Baseline data from a randomized controlled trial aimed at improving t…
Moderating Effects of Positive Parenting on the Perceived Peer Alcohol Use and Adolescent Alcohol Use Relationship
Trends and disparities in unmet treatment needs for co-occurring depression and alcohol use disorders among young adults in the U.S
Major depressive episode (MDE) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) often co-occur and the presence of one doubles the risk for the other, which brings disabling social and health consequences. Increasing evidence supports integrated treatment of co-occurring MDE and AUD, including combined medications for both conditions as well as behavioral therapies. While young adults suffer disproportionately from these co-occurring conditions, little is known ab…
Barriers and Facilitators for Mental Health Service Use Among Racial/Ethnic Minority Adolescents
Introduction: Mental disorders represent serious public health concerns in the U.S. Compared with Whites, racial/ethnic minority adolescents are more likely to be affected by mental disorders but less likely to use mental health services. This systematic review aimed to summarize factors related to mental health service use among minority adolescents in the U.S. as identified in previous research. Methodology: Following the PRISMA guideline, we s…
Early Detection of Severe Functional Impairment Among Adolescents With Major Depression Using Logistic Classifier
Machine learning is about finding patterns and making predictions from raw data. In this study, we aimed to achieve two goals by utilizing the modern logistic regression model as a statistical tool and classifier. First, we analyzed the associations between Major Depressive Episode with Severe Impairment (MDESI) in adolescents with a list of broadly defined sociodemographic characteristics. Using findings from the logistic model, the second and u…
To Unfold the Immigrant Paradox
Children of immigrants are often considered to be at increased risk of mental health problems due to families' immigration-related stress and perceived discrimination and prejudice from the host country. However, many studies found them to have better developmental outcomes than children with native-born parents in the U.S. This study aims to unfold this paradoxical phenomenon using data from a population-based cohort of children born in large U.…
Cumulative Health Risk Behaviors and Adolescent Suicide
Objectives: In this study, we investigated the association between cumulative health risk behaviors (HRBs) and adolescent suicidal behaviors and the moderating effect of future orientation. Methods: We used data were from 4255 adolescents in grades 9 th -12 th participating in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Wave I-II). We computed a cumulative HRB index by using 14 HRB indicators covering diet, physical activity, sleep, soc…
Adolescent Depression
Objectives: This study examines national trends in the prevalence, risk factors, and treatment of depression among adolescents and investigate disparities in their mental health service use in the US. Methods: Data for adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (N = 95,856) who participated in the annual, cross-sectional National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2011 to 2016 were pooled and analyzed. Time trends and predictors of adolescents' depr…
Attitudinal, Behavioral, and Environmental Correlates of Child and Parent Self-Efficacy in Walking to School
As a critical social cognitive construct, self-efficacy plays a determinant role in children's walking to school (WTS). However, little is known about factors that are underlying children's and parents' self-efficacy in WTS. The purpose of this study is to examine behavioral, attitudinal, and environmental correlates of child self-efficacy and parent self-efficacy in WTS, and to assess differences in the correlates of child versus parent self-eff…
Psychometric Properties of the CES-D Among Black Adolescents in Public Housing
Objective: The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) has not been fully validated as a depression screening scale among Black adolescents. This study examines the psychometric properties of the CES-D as applied to Black adolescents, seeking to understand the unique way in which Black adolescents express their depression symptoms. Method: We hypothesized that the expression and factor structure of depressive symptoms measured b…
Active Commuting to School
The IM may enable health behavior researchers to design effective interventions to promote ACS
Food-shopping Environment Disparities in Texas WIC Vendors
In Texas, disparities in food-shopping environments are evident and can be assessed using a culturally adapted survey tool
