Healthcare Associated Infections, Nurse Staffing, and Financial Performance
Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are a concern to patients, hospital administrators and policymakers. For over than a decade, efforts have been made to hold hospitals accountable for the costs of HAIs. This longitudinal study examines whether readmission rates, made transparent through Hospital Compare, affect hospital financial performance by examining 98 hospitals in the State of Washington from 2012 to 2014. A Copayment Increase for Prescription Drugs
This study estimates the effects of an increase in an outpatient prescription drug copayment using a natural experiment based upon a large firm that implemented such an increase. The findings suggest that the primary effect of a copayment increase is attenuation of the trend in prescription drug utilization. We also find an initial reduction in expenditures, with the effects on spending diminishing. Employees with an existing chronic illness and …
The Financial Implications of Coverage of Smoking Cessation Treatment by Managed Care Organizations
This paper presents results from a simulation of the financial impact and cost effectiveness of smoking cessation in a hypothetical managed care organization (MCO), using data from three large managed care organizations and from existing literature. With base-case assumptions and a market cost of capital, at five years, coverage of cessation services costs an MCO dollars .61 per member per month (PMPM).
