  • Medicaid Dental Coverage and Preventive Dental Care Use Among Pregnant Adults

Open Access•Julie C Reynolds, Tabitha Peter et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2025

Having dental insurance is critically important to be able to access needed dental care and avoid substantial out-of-pocket costs. This study found that for pregnant adults in Medicaid who who hadn't had a dental cleaning in the year prior to pregnancy, having extensive dental coverage was significantly associated with much higher odds of having a dental cleaning during pregnancy relative to having emergency or no dental coverage. Our findings, t…

  • Dental Care Use Among Children and Adolescents in Medicaid

Open Access•Julie C Reynolds, Carissa Comnick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2025

There was considerable variation by age group in the associations of state-level factors on dental care use among children and adolescents in Medicaid. Dentist participation in Medicaid was associated with dental care use among very young children. State-level policy levers have the potential to improve access to dental care for children enrolled in Medicaid, and are critical to achieve improvement toward oral health equity for children

  • Perceived Social Status and Oral Health Among Medicaid Insured Adults in Iowa

    Open Access•Jennifer Sukalski, Natoshia M Askelson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2024

Purpose: Perceived social status (PSS), a measure of social status, reflects cumulative lifetime effects of an individual's relative social status based on resources and lived experiences. PSS is hypothesized to better capture social status compared to traditional measures of socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e., education, occupation, and income). Although recognized as a predictor of health-related morbidity and mortality, limited research has expl…

  • Medicaid Dental Benefits for Pregnant People and Dental Care Use Among Very Young Children

Open Access•Julie C Reynolds, Carissa Comnick et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2024

  • Variation in dentist participation between dental medicaid managed care organizations

Open Access•P Nwachukwu, Peter C Damiano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2024

There was considerable variation in dentist-reported acceptance of new adult and child Medicaid patients, and in the factors affecting acceptance of new patients between MCOs in Iowa dental Medicaid. Future studies of Medicaid participation should consider variations by MCO in states with more than one dental MCO so as not to miss important factors affecting Medicaid participation

  • Perceived social status, socioeconomic status, and preventive dental utilization among a low‐income Medicaid adult population

Open Access•Jennifer Sukalski, Natoshia M Askelson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2023

PSS demonstrated a small positive association with dental utilization. Results support the relative importance of PSS, in addition to SES measures, as PSS may capture aspects of social class that SES measures do not. Results suggest the need for future research to consider the effects of PSS on oral health outcomes and behaviors

  • Dentist attitudes toward an annual benefit maximum in Iowa's adult Medicaid program

Open Access•Morgan Scholtes, Carissa Comnick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2022

Utilizing an ABM, particularly one set at $1000 for a Medicaid program, elicits mixed attitudes among dentists. Future research should evaluate the impact of Medicaid ABMs on long term dentist participation and patient's ability to receive needed care

  • Randomized experiment on the effect of incentives and mailing strategy on response rates in a mail survey of dentists

Open Access•Susan C McKernan, Julie C Reynolds et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2022

This study demonstrated the effectiveness of a $2 incentive to increase response rate in a mail survey of dentists. Given the background trend of declining survey participation rates, researchers should consider use of monetary incentives and explore new strategies to increase participation among dentists and other health care providers

  • Patient centered dental home

Open Access•Julie C Reynolds, Peter C Damiano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2021

This project phase further developed a PCDH measurement framework that aims to guide practice transformation, quality measurement and improvement in dental care delivery, as well as integration between medicine and dentistry. Using a Delphi approach with a broad group of stakeholders ensured that components had face validity and were conceptually aligned with the PCDH definition and characteristics

  • Medicaid Health Home Reducing Costs and Reliance on Emergency Department

    Dan M Shane, Phuong Nguyen-Hoang et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2016•Referências: 12

BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act allowed an optional Medicaid State Plan benefit for states to establish Health Homes coordinating care for people who have chronic conditions. Differences in medical home program incentives and implementation styles are important to understand in evaluating effects on key outcomes such as cost and acute care. In Iowa, a Medicaid Health Home (MHH) program was developed targeting Medicaid members with multiple ch…

  • Predicting dentists’ decisions

Open Access•Elham Kateeb, Elham T Kateeb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2015

This study revealed trade-offs that dentists make when deciding to participate in Medicaid. Findings indicate that states can potentially improve Medicaid participation without changing reimbursement rates by making improvements in claims processing and care coordination to reduce missed appointments

  • Potential utilization of expanded function dental auxiliaries to place restoratives

Open Access•Brian G Darling, Michael J Kanellis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2015

Many dentists are willing to delegate reversible restorative procedures. Increasing scope of practice for auxiliaries may increase capacity of the existing dental workforce and improve access for newly insured populations. Expanding scope of practice for dental auxiliaries offers a viable mechanism to rapidly increase states' dental capacity in response to rising demands for dental care, including newly insured Medicaid populations

  • Geographic variation of dental utilization among low income children

    Open Access•Susan C McKernan, Raymond A Kuthy et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Place•2015•Referências: 2

Open Access•George L Wehby, George Wehby et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Our study finds the VAS to perform relatively well in measuring overall HRQoL among children with oral clefts. The VAS may be useful as a screening tool to identify children with oral clefts at risk of low HRQoL for referral into more comprehensive evaluations and for measuring average HRQoL across a sample of children

  • The willingness of US pediatric dentists to use atraumatic restorative treatment ( ART ) with their patients

Open Access•Elham Kateeb, Elham Talib Kateeb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2014

Although insurance coverage was the least important among the factors, being without insurance, being very young, and being uncooperative was the scenario where pediatric dentists most favored ART when making trade offs between different factors using the conjoint design

  • Geographic accessibility and utilization of orthodontic services among M edicaid children and adolescents

Open Access•Susan C McKernan, Raymond A Kuthy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

Rural residency and increased travel distances do not appear to act as barriers to orthodontic care for this population. The wide variability of utilization rates seen across service areas may be related to workforce supply in the form of orthodontists who accept Medicaid-insured patients. Referrals to orthodontists from primary care dentists may improve access to specialty care for Medicaid enrollees

  • Periodicity of dental recall visits for young children first seen in community health centers

Open Access•Raymond A Kuthy, Golnaz Kavand et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2013

The experience gained from having other Medicaid-enrolled children in the household appears to be important for younger children entering into continuous and comprehensive dental care
