Health Care Outcomes of Homelessness Prevention Programs in Veterans Experiencing Housing Instability
In this study, federal prevention solutions to homelessness were associated with improved health outcomes and lower inpatient costs, which should inform national policy debates within and beyond the VA
Association Between Specialty-Specific Physician Salaries and Percentage of Women in the Workforce
Reach and Engagement With Population Health Management Interventions to Address Covid-19 Among Safety-Net Health Care Systems
Interventions designed to address COVID-19 needed to be rapidly scaled up to the population level, and to address health equity by reaching historically marginalized populations most affected by the pandemic (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities and rural and low socioeconomic status populations). From February 2021 to June 2022, SCALE-UP Utah used text messaging interventions to reach 107 846 patients from 28 clinics within seven safety-net health car…
Which veterans in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program receive temporary financial assistance and why
The VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program is one of the largest housing assistance programs in the US. One of the key components of this program is temporary financial assistance (TFA) which can be used for rent, security deposits, utilities, and other housing-related expenses. The objective of this paper was to identify characteristics of SSVF enrollees that are associated with receiving any TFA and the amount of TFA receive…
In Data We Trust? Comparison of Electronic Versus Manual Abstraction of Antimicrobial Prescribing Quality Metrics for Hospitalized Veterans With Pneumonia
BACKGROUND: Electronic health records provide the opportunity to assess system-wide quality measures. Veterans Affairs Pharmacy Benefits Management Center for Medication Safety uses medication use evaluation (MUE) through manual review of the electronic health records. OBJECTIVE: To compare an electronic MUE approach versus human/manual review for extraction of antibiotic use (choice and duration) and severity metrics. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospect…
Effect of Naturally Occurring Ozone Air Pollution Episodes on Pulmonary Oxidative Stress and Inflammation
This study aimed to determine if naturally occurring episodes of ozone air pollution in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah, USA, during the summer are associated with increased pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress, increased respiratory symptoms, and decreased lung function in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared to controls. We measured biomarkers (nitrite/nitrate (NOx), 8-isoprostane) in exhaled breath condens…
Reducing Time-dependent Bias in Estimates of the Attributable Cost of Health Care–associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections
BACKGROUND: Previous estimates of the excess costs due to health care-associated infection (HAI) have scarcely addressed the issue of time-dependent bias. OBJECTIVE: We examined time-dependent bias by estimating the health care costs attributable to an HAI due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) using a unique dataset in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that makes it possible to distinguish between costs that occurred bef…
A New Equation to Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate
BACKGROUND: Equations to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR) are routinely used to assess kidney function. Current equations have limited precision and systematically underestimate measured GFR at higher values. OBJECTIVE: To develop a new estimating equation for GFR: the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis with separate pooled data sets for equation development and validati…
A Simulation-Based Evaluation of Methods to Estimate the Impact of an Adverse Event on Hospital Length of Stay
INTRODUCTION: We used agent-based simulation to examine the problem of time-varying confounding when estimating the effect of an adverse event on hospital length of stay. Conventional analytic methods were compared with inverse probability weighting (IPW). METHODS: A cohort of hospitalized patients, at risk for experiencing an adverse event, was simulated. Synthetic individuals were assigned a severity of illness score on admission. The score var…
Low-Level Environmental Lead Exposure and Children’s Intellectual Function
Lead is a confirmed neurotoxin, but questions remain about lead-associated intellectual deficits at blood lead levels or = 7.5 microg/dL (p = 0.015). We conclude that environmental lead exposure in children who have maximal blood lead levels < 7.5 microg/dL is associated with intellectual deficits.
A More Accurate Method To Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate from Serum Creatinine
BACKGROUND: Serum creatinine concentration is widely used as an index of renal function, but this concentration is affected by factors other than glomerular filtration rate (GFR). OBJECTIVE: To develop an equation to predict GFR from serum creatinine concentration and other factors. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of GFR, creatinine clearance, serum creatinine concentration, and demographic and clinical characteristics in patients with chronic rena…
