Psychometric Synthesis of the Drug Abuse Screening Test (Dast) Versions
Impact of Social Risk Screening on Discharge Care Processes and Postdischarge Outcomes
BACKGROUND: Social risk screening during inpatient care is required in new CMS regulations, yet its impact on inpatient care and patient outcomes is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether implementing a social risk screening protocol improves discharge processes, patient-reported outcomes, and 30-day service use. RESEARCH DESIGN: Pragmatic mixed-methods clinical trial. SUBJECTS: Overall, 4130 patient discharges (2383 preimplementation and 1747 …
Mixed methods analysis of a national implementation of a medical respite program in transitional housing settings for veterans experiencing homelessness
Hospital to Housing (H2H) is a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) program providing medical respite care to veteran's experiencing homelessness. The program partners community organizations providing transitional housing with local VA facilities delivering medical care for post-hospitalization veterans for clinical stabilization and ultimately, permanent housing. The program was launched October 2017 at 43 sites. Using mixed methods, we aim to as…
Learning to think spatially through curricula that embed spatial training
Strong spatial skills are foundational in predicting students' performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. Decades of research have considered the relationship between thinking spatially and how scientists reason and solve problems. However, few studies have examined the factors that influence improvement in students' spatial thinking during their school science curricula. The present study investigates the ThinkSp…

Electronic informed consent information for residual newborn specimen research
Comparison of Video, App, and Standard Consent Processes on Decision-Making for Biospecimen Research
Obtaining informed consent for bloodspot research from newborn screening is particularly challenging due to the hectic environment of the postnatal period and the relatively abstract nature of future, unspecified research on the biospecimens. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in three Michigan hospitals to compare two different consent processes (video and interactive tablet "app") with standard brochure-based consent in the Michigan Bi…
Education for fathers about newborn screening and leftover dried blood spots
An Assessment of a Shortened Consent Form for the Storage and Research Use of Residual Newborn Screening Blood Spots
As state newborn screening programs develop approaches to parental permission for the storage and use of residual dried newborn screening samples, it is important to understand how the public comprehends the consent elements. Focus groups in Utah, California, and Michigan ( n = 7 groups, 69 participants) were conducted to evaluate the language on a shortened consent form. Outcomes from the analysis included barriers to conceptualizing biospecimen…
Persistent Super-Utilization of Acute Care Services Among Subgroups of Veterans Experiencing Homelessness
BACKGROUND: Acute health care utilization often occurs among persons experiencing homelessness. However, knowing which individuals will be persistent super-utilizers of acute care is less well understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify those more likely to be persistent super-utilizers of acute care services. RESEARCH DESIGN: We conducted a latent class analysis of secondary data from the Veterans Health Administration Corp…
Patient-aligned Care Team Engagement to Connect Veterans Experiencing Homelessness With Appropriate Health Care
BACKGROUND: Veterans experiencing homelessness frequently use emergency and urgent care (ED). OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of a Patient-aligned Care Team (PACT) model tailored to the unique needs of Veterans experiencing homelessness (H-PACT) on frequency and type of ED visits in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical facilities. RESEARCH DESIGN: During a 12-month period, ED visits for 3981 homeless Veterans enrolled in (1) H-PACT at 20…
Teen Depression Groups on Facebook
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed disorders in early adolescence and can lead to a multitude of negative life outcomes, highlighting the need for early and effective intervention to mitigate depressive symptoms. Recognizing the preference of youth to seek informal sources of help for mental health issues, which may include the Internet, the social networking site Facebook was investigated as a potential sourc…
Meta-Analysis of the English Version of the Beck Depression Inventory–Second Edition
This meta-analysis reviewed 144 studies from 1996 to 2013 using the Beck Depression Inventory–Second Edition. Internal consistency was .89 and test–retest reliability .75. Convergent comparisons were robust across 43 depression instruments. Structural validity supported both one- and two-factor solutions and diagnostic accuracy varied according to sample and criterion cutoff
Identifying Mental and Physical Health Correlates of Homelessness Among First-Time and Chronically Homeless Veterans
This study examined four categories of self-reported health and mental health factors and their association with recurrent or chronic homelessness in a sample of homeless Veterans presenting for care for the first time. These factors and their relationship to housing status were examined in a cross-sectional analysis comparing first-time or single episode homeless Veterans to chronic or repeat emergency sheltered or unsheltered homeless Veterans.…
New to Care
Objectives. We compared service use among homeless and nonhomeless veterans newly enrolled in a medical home model and identified patterns of use among homeless veterans associated with reductions in emergency department (ED) use. Methods. We used case–control matching with a nested cohort analysis to measure 6-month health services use, new diagnoses, and care use patterns in veterans at the Providence, Rhode Island, Veterans Affairs Medical Cen…
Enhancing Teen Pregnancy Prevention in Local Communities
Getting To Outcomes (GTO), an innovative framework for planning, implementing, evaluating, and sustaining interventions has been shown to be effective in helping community‐based organizations (CBOs) introduce science‐based approaches into their prevention work. However, the Interactive Systems Framework (ISF) suggests that adopting innovations like GTO requires a significant amount of capacity building through training and technical assistance (T…
