The Association of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use and Health Care Expenditures for Back and Neck Problems
BACKGROUND: Health care costs associated with use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by patients with spine problems have not been studied in a national sample. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the total and spine-specific medical expenditures among CAM and non-CAM users with spine problems. RESEARCH DESIGN: Analysis of the 2002-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. SUBJECTS: Adults (above 17 y) with self-reported neck and back problems who …
Chiropractic Use by Urban and Rural Residents With Insurance Coverage
Purpose: To describe the use of chiropractic care by urban and rural residents in Washington state with musculoskeletal diagnoses, all of whom have insurance coverage for this care. The analyses investigate whether restricting the analyses to insured individuals attenuates previously reported differences in the prevalence of chiropractic use between urban and rural residents as well as whether differences in provider availability or patient cost‐…

The Effect of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Claims on Risk Adjustment
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess how the inclusion of claims from complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) providers affects measures of morbidity burden and expectations of health care resource use for insured patients. METHODS: Claims data from Washington State were used to create 2 versions of a case-mix index. One version included claims from all provider types; the second version omitted claims from CAM providers who are covered under comm…
Provision of Sexual Health Services to Adolescent Enrollees in Medicaid Managed Care
Objectives. This Seattle project measured sexual health services provided to 1112 Medicaid managed care enrollees aged 14 to 18 years. Methods. Three health maintenance organizations (HMOs) that provide Medicaid services for a capitated rate agreed to participate. These included a non-profit staff-model HMO, a for-profit independent practice association (IPA), and a non-profit alliance of community clinics. Analyses used health maintenance organi…
Survival trends of people with Aids in Washington State
Survival rates of 609 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in Washington State diagnosed between 1982 and 1987 according to pre-1987 AIDS surveillance definition were analyzed. People with a primary diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma survived longer than those with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Both groups survived longer than those with other diagnoses. Median survival increased from 11.3, to 12.5, to 20.8 months for cases diagnosed i…
Hospital charges for people with Aids in Washington State
We analyzed Washington State inpatient hospital utilization for 165 AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) cases with 344 hospitalizations from July 1984 through December 1985. We found that mean charges per hospitalization were $9,166 and mean length of stay was 13.3 days. In addition, evaluation of two diagnosis-related groups (DRGs 079 and 398) commonly used for AIDS hospitalizations showed that AIDS hospitalizations were substantially more…
