Yael Benyamini, Tzvia Blumstein et al.•ARTICLE•The Gerontologist•2003

PURPOSE: This study investigates gender differences in the association between self-rated health (SRH) and mortality. This association has been well-documented, but findings regarding gender differences are inconsistent. The specific objectives were (a) to examine these differences in a short and a long time frame, (b) to examine these differences among old and old-old people, and (c) to address the question of whether this association is based o…

  • Social Factors and Mortality in the Old-Old in Israel

    Adrian Walter‐ginzburg, A Walter-Ginzburg et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2002•Citada por: 18•Referências: 13

The finding that participating in activities with people outside of the immediate family is associated with a lower risk of death has practical implications for helping the aging population and their families in their decision-making process. Lack of support for the hypothesis that those with more social support would show reduced risk of mortality may indicate that the positive effect of perceiving support and the negative effect of needing supp…

  • Gender Differences in Positive and Negative Self-Assessments of Health Status in a National Epidemiological Study of Israeli Aged

Edward Prager, Adrian Walter-Ginzburg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•1999

The literature in subjective health appraisals frequently notes that elderly women, more so than men, generally experience a lower quality of life in all major indicators (physical health status, functional ability, perceived income adequacy, social contacts, psychological distress, and cognitive ability). The current epidemiological study, of 1,352 reporting Israeli subjects between the ages of 75-94, was undertaken in order to obtain reliable e…

Baruch Modan, R Goldschmidt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1992•Citada por: 3•Referências: 2

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence was studied in an unselected group of 216 female and transsexual prostitutes. Subjects were asked about age, biological sex, marital status, children, length of occupation, sexual practices, and drug abuse history. Blood was drawn on site. All 128 females who did not admit to drug abuse were seronegative; 2 of the 52 females (3.8%) who admitted to intravenous drug abuse were seropositive. In contrast,…

A study of 4,976 high-school students in Israel, representative of this age group for the entire country except for 13 percent who attend religious schools, revealed that about one-third of the boys aged 14-15 and almost one-half of those in the 16-17 age category have had sexual intercourse. The respective figures for girls are 6 percent and 16 percent. Age at onset of sexual activity was found to be higher and the level of knowledge about the s…

  • Sexual attitude‐behavior discrepancy among Israeli adolescent girls

Helen F Antonovsky, Ilana Shoham et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1978•Citada por: 5•Referências: 4

It was predicted that adolescent girls who had engaged in premarital coitus but who felt that virginity until marriage was important would, compared to coitally experienced girls who did not consider virginity important, come from more traditional families, have fewer positive feelings about their first coital experience, have had intercourse less frequently, and give more external sources of influence for their first experience. Primary data wer…

  • Attitudes toward Mental Disease in a Sample of Israeli Urban Residents

Moshe Zohar, Suzy Floro et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1978

A random sample of 463 residents of the Tel Aviv Metropolitan area in the 30 to 59 age group were interviewed in order to evaluate their attitude toward mental health. The image of mental disease among the respondents was vague and a general rejection of the ex-mental patient was observed. This is in contrast with findings of several similar studies conducted previously in the U.S
