Qualitative insights into the acceptability of self-collection for cervical screening amongst under- and never-screened groups in Australia
While self-collection has the potential to expand screening accessibility and may offer individual benefits, increased awareness of its availability and attention to identified barriers are needed to ensure that everyone is given true choice in the way they screen
The role of non-medical providers in increasing access to cervical screening
INTRODUCTION: Involving non-medical providers (NMPs) in cervical screening interventions could be a promising strategy to increase cervical screening participation among never or underscreened populations. We undertook a scoping review of published literature to explore the potential role of NMPs in increasing cervical screening participation. METHODS: We searched three databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL) to identify relevant scientific resear…
So, if she wasn’t aware of it, then how would everybody else out there be aware of it?”—Key Stakeholder Perspectives on the Initial Implementation of Self-Collection in Australia’s Cervical Screening …
Whilst the introduction of self-collection was welcomed, clear communication from Government regarding setbacks in implementation and how to overcome these in practice were needed. As Australia moves to a policy of providing everyone eligible for screening the choice of self-collection, wider promotion to providers and eligible people, clarity around pathology processes and the scaling up of test availability, as well as timely education and comm…
Measuring school level attributable risk to support school-based HPV vaccination programs
This analysis suggests that initiatives to support schools that are smaller, with a higher proportion of Indigenous adolescents and lower attendance rates may contribute most to reducing the variation of HPV vaccination uptake observed at a school-level in these jurisdictions. Estimating population-level coverage at the school-level is useful to guide policy and prioritise resourcing to support school-based vaccination programs
Poor self-rated oral health associated with poorer general health among Indigenous Australians
Fair or poor self-rated oral health among Indigenous persons in South Australia was associated with poor general health as measured by EQ-5D-5L disutility. The relationship was especially evident with respect to mobility, self-care and anxiety/depression. The findings emphasise the importance of oral health as predictors of general health among Indigenous Australians
Population-based utility scores for HPV infection and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma among Indigenous Australians
Among a large sample of Indigenous Australians, utility for oral HPV infection and OPSCC decreased with severity of health states. Older participants, as well as males and those residing in non-metropolitan locations, had decreased utility for high-grade cytology and early invasive cancer states. Our findings are an important contribution to cost-utility and disease prevention strategies that seek to inform policies around reducing HPV infection …
Factors influencing military recruitment in South Africa
This research sets out to establish how the youth in South Africa view military service, and what factors affect the ability of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to attract suitable recruits to staff its modern, technologically advanced military. Due to high levels of youth unemployment, South Africa has sufficient persons volunteering for military service. The problem lies with recruiting sufficient quality personnel with the righ…
Tackling health literacy
Involving the target community to identify health issues as well as help to create culturally, language and literacy sensitive health education materials ensures resources are highly acceptable to that community. Minor changes to the materials will be needed prior to formal testing of hypertension knowledge and health decision-making on a larger scale within this at risk community
Cervical cancer screening in Australia
Lengthening the recommended screening interval to 3 years in Australia is not predicted to result in increases in rates of cervical cancer and is predicted to decrease the number of women undergoing diagnostic and treatment procedures. These findings are consistent with a large body of international evidence showing that screening more frequently than every three years with cervical cytology does not result in substantial gains in screening effec…
