  • Violence Against Women With HIV Risk and Recent Criminal Justice System Involvement

    Open Access•Brian W Weir, Ronda S Bard et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2008•Citada por: 3•Referências: 6

This research note examines the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and other violence (OV) among women (N = 529) at risk for HIV and with histories of criminal justice system involvement. The 3-month prevalences of IPV and OV were 31.2% and 18.7%, respectively. IPV was associated with having a current main partner, substance use, sexual risk behavior, trading sex, anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem. OV was associ…

  • The association between advertising and calls to a tobacco quitline

Craig Mosbaek, Craig H Mosbaek et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2007

Placement of television advertisements during the day versus the evening can increase an advertisement's effectiveness in generating calls to a quitline. Some advertising messages were more effective than others in generating calls to a quitline. Quitline providers can apply findings from previous research when planning media campaigns. In addition, call volume should be monitored in order to assess the cost effectiveness of different strategies …

  • The effectiveness and cost effectiveness of telephone counselling and the nicotine patch in a state tobacco quitline

    Jack F Hollis, Timothy A McAfee et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2007

Offering free NRT and multisession telephone support within a state tobacco quitline led to higher quit rates, and similar costs per incremental quit, than less intensive protocols

  • Is a statewide tobacco quitline an appropriate service for specific populations

Julie E Maher, Kristen Rohde et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2007

The Washington QL appeared effective and well received by callers from the specific populations studied. States choosing to promote their QL more aggressively should feel confident that a tobacco QL can be an effective and well received cessation service for smokers who call from a broad range of communities

  • The Impact of Clean Indoor Air Exemptions and Preemption Policies on the Prevalence of a Tobacco-Specific Lung Carcinogen Among Nonsmoking Bar and Restaurant Workers

Michael J Stark, Kristen Rohde et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2007•Citada por: 4•Referências: 43

Objectives. We studied the impact of clean indoor air law exemptions and preemption policies on the prevalence of a tobacco-specific lung carcinogen—4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK)—among nonsmoking bar and restaurant workers. Methods.secondhand smoke were compared with results from participants who were exposed to it. Results. Participants exposed to workplace secondhand smoke were more likely to have any detectable level of …

  • A prospective study of household smoking bans and subsequent cessation related behaviour

    Barbara Pizacani, B A Pizacani et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2004

Objective: To assess the degree to which smokers living with a full household ban on smoking change their cessation related behaviour. Design, setting, and participants: Prospective cohort study; follow up of a population based cohort of 1133 smokers, identified from a 1997 telephone survey of adult Oregonians. After a median of 21 months, 565 were located and reinterviewed. Main outcome measures: Quit attempts, time until relapse, and smoking ce…

  • The uninsured and Medicaid Oregon tobacco user experience in a real world, phone based cessation programme

    A Y El-Bastawissi, Ay El-Bastawissi et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2003

The quit rates are similar to those reported in efficacy trials. The observed variation in quitting tobacco for respondents by number of calls completed and by insurance merits further investigation concentrating on increasing compliance with the call schedule, particularly for the uninsured

  • Telephone Recruitment of a Random Stratified African American and White Family Study Sample

Susan C Duncan, Lisa A Strycker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2002

Few researchers have documented procedures and methods for recruitment of a random sample to assess risky health-related behavior, such as substance use, across different ethnicities. This study describes the recruitment methods used to attain a stratified sample of 368 target youths (African American and White males and females from 9-, 11-, and 13-year-old cohorts), along with all household family members aged 9 and older, representing families…

  • Drug-using men who have sex with men

    Sherry Deren, M Stark et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2001

Men who have sex with men (MSM) and use drugs are at high risk for HIV. This study assessed drug and sex-related risk behaviours and sexual identities for MSM drug injectors and crack smokers. One hundred and forty four MSM drug injectors and crack smokers from five USA cities were interviewed. One-third of the men were current injectors, twice as many reported lifetime injection. Most (56%) reported sex with women in the prior year; sex trading …

  • HIV infection and patterns of risk among women drug injectors and crack users in low and high sero-prevalence sites

Stephanie Tortu, Mark Beardsley et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2000

As AIDS cases among US women continue to increase, a better understanding of women's behavioural risk patterns is needed to inform intervention efforts. Data were from 2,945 women drug injectors and crack users. Statistical analyses compared sociodemographic variables, lifetime behavioural risk patterns, HIV sero-prevalence and history of sexually transmitted diseases, and determined predictors of HIV infection separately in 16 low and four high …

  • Understanding HIV risks of chronic drug-using men who have sex with men

Fen Rhodes, Sherry Deren et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1999

Focus groups and individual structured interviews were conducted in six cities with 98 predominantly street-recruited men who had a recent history of smoking crack or injecting drugs and who reported having had sex with other men (MSM) in the past year. Twenty-six focus groups explored the cultural and social context of participant's drug use and sexual activity and addressed outreach and HIV prevention issues pertinent to this population. Narrat…

  • Treating Cigarette Smoking in Methadone Maintenance Clients

Jim L Story, Jim Story et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psychoactive Drugs•1991

Substance abusers in treatment have cigarette-smoking rates about three times that found in the general adult population, yet there is a paucity of published studies examining smoking-cessation programs for these clients. Accordingly, a behaviorally based smoking-cessation program for methadone maintenance clients was developed, and the efficacy of a methadone dose increase as a pharmacological adjunct was tested in a double-blind placebo-control…
