  • New chronology for the southern Kalahari Group sediments with implications for sediment-cycle dynamics and early hominin occupation

    Open Access•Ari Matmon, Alan J Hidy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Kalahari Group sediments accumulated in the Kalahari basin, which started forming during the breakup of Gondwana in the early Cretaceous. These sediments cover an extensive part of southern Africa and form a low-relief landscape. Current models assume that the Kalahari Group accumulated throughout the entire Cenozoic. However, chronology has been restricted to early–middle Cenozoic biostratigraphic correlations and to OSL dating of only the past …

  • Audits, Reputation, and Repeated Interaction in a Capital Budgeting Setting

    M Arnold, Markus C Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•2013

This experimental study investigates the use of audits as a control instrument in capital budgeting processes and factors that contribute to audit efficiency (or inefficiency) in a repeated relationship. We disentangle reputational aspects of superiors and subordinates from an increased social content in repeated relationships. In settings where subjects face new counterparts every round, we find that reputational aspects strongly affect the supe…

  • Dating French and Spanish Prehistoric Decorated Caves in Their Archaeological Contexts

    Open Access•H Valladas, E Kaltnecker et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Citada por: 8•Referências: 11

The Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) research program on prehistoric art conducts chronological studies of parietal representations with their associated archaeological context. This multidisciplinary approach provides chronological arguments about the creation period of parietal representations. This article presents chronological investigations carried out in several decorated caves in France (La Grande Grotte, La…

  • Artemis, the New 14 C AMS at LMC14 in Saclay, France

    Open Access•E Cottereau, M Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Citada por: 34•Referências: 5

The new facility Artemis was installed in 2003 in Saclay, France. This 3MV NEC Pelletron is dedicated to high-precision radiocarbon measurements for French 14 C laboratories. We will present information on Artemis along with our sample preparation methods. Results from measurements on some intercalibration samples will be given along with the values of measured blanks. Finally, we report on some problems we have encountered when measuring sputter…

  • Stock Options and Dividend Protection

M Arnold, Markus C Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2005

Stock-option programs (SOPs) became the dominant compensation instrument for top management in the nineties. Usually, they are not dividend-protected, i.e., any dividend payout decreases the value of a manager's options. Empirical evidence shows that this results in a significant decrease in the level of corporate dividends and, at the same time, in an increase in share repurchases. This paper analyzes different forms of dividend protection and a…

  • AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Bones at LSCE

    Open Access•N Tisnérat-Laborde, H Valladas et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2003•Citada por: 25•Referências: 22

In this paper, we explain our routine pretreatment of bone for radiocarbon dating by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), based on the specific reaction between amino acids and ninhydrin described by Nelson (1991). The values and uncertainties of the total system background are presented as a function of the carbon sample mass and the reliability of this method is discussed

  • Radiocarbon AMS Dates for Paleolithic Cave Paintings

    Open Access•H Valladas, N Tisnérat-Laborde et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Citada por: 21•Referências: 10

Advances in radiocarbon dating by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) have made it possible to date prehistoric cave paintings by sampling the pigment itself instead of relying on dates derived from miscellaneous prehistoric remains recovered in the vicinity of the paintings. The work at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) concentrated on prehistoric charcoal cave paintings from southern France and northern Spain. …

  • On the date of construction of Lechaion, western harbor of ancient Corinth, Greece

    Open Access•Stathis C Stiros, S Stiros et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1996•Referências: 2

Lechaion, the western harbor of ancient Corinth, was an artificial harbor excavated in a marshy area and connected to the open sea through a channel with revetment walls. It was probably the most important harbor of this type in antiquity, and one of the most important harbors in Greece for more than one millennium. Yet, the date of construction of this harbor is a matter of debate; 600 B.C., ca. 44 B.C., and A.D. 350 are the most probable dates.…

  • Late-Holocene shoreline changes related to palaeoseismic events in the Ionian Islands, Greece

    Open Access•Paolo A Pirazzoli, Stathis C Stiros et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•Citada por: 1

A systematic multidisciplinary survey on the coasts of the Ionian Islands, founded on 26 new radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrography (AMS) dates, has revealed the occurrence of sectors which were uplifted (seismo)tectonically during the late Holocene. In Corfu, two uplift movements of about 0.8m each took place in the central part of the island: one of them around 790-400 cal. BC, and also at a more recent, undetermined date. In Levkas, up-and…

The ongoing archaeological excavations that started in 1986 on the site of the harbor of Phalasarna have confirmed that the ancient port described as a closed harbor by ancient geographers is, due to the regional uplift of west Crete, now situated on dry land, about 6.6 m above sea level. In this paper, after summarizing the geological background, the main historical sources and recent archaeological results, new stratigraphical data obtained fro…
