Understanding what it means to be socially included for people with a lived experience of mental illness
AIMS: Social inclusion is increasingly understood to have positive and beneficial implications for the mental health outcomes of people with severe mental illness. The concept is plagued by definitional inconsistencies and a lack of consensus regarding what it means to be socially included, in particular for groups most vulnerable to social exclusion, such as people with mental illness. The aim of this study was to obtain a consensus regarding th…
Preliminary Evidence for the Cognitive Model of Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Youth With Borderline Personality Disorder
Objectives: This is the first study to explore cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to voices in youth with borderline personality disorder (BPD) compared with those with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SZ), and to examine if negative appraisals of voices predict depression and anxiety across the groups. Methods: The sample comprised 43 outpatients, aged 15-25 years, who reported auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) and were diagnosed …

The relationship between attitudes to aging and physical and mental health in older adults
BACKGROUND: Attitudes are known to exert a powerful influence on a range of behaviors. The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of attitudes toward one's own aging to satisfaction with life and physical and mental health measured in a sample of community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Adults who were part of a larger study of health and well-being in rural and regional Australia aged ≥60 years (N = 421) completed a cross-s…
Childhood trauma and psychosis
There is controversy over whether childhood trauma (CT) is a causal risk factor for psychosis. The aim of this study was to provide psychologists with a brief overview of the research into relationship between childhood trauma and psychosis and directions for psychological interventions. It details six of the highest quality studies in the area and tentatively concludes from these that there is evidence for a relationship between CT and psychosis…
Cognitive-Personality Style as Vulnerability to Depression in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the cognitive-personality styles of sociotropy and autonomy and their component subscales are useful for explaining depressogenic vulnerability in a population of individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) and to better understand the psychosocial etiology of depression in CAD. Depression occurs commonly in patients with CAD and is associated with substantial disability. METHOD: A prospective study of 193 rec…
Illness Beliefs About Heart Disease and Adherence to Secondary Prevention Regimens
Objective: We investigated illness beliefs of recently hospitalized patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and the prospective association between these beliefs and adherence to secondary prevention behaviors. Causal attributions of CAD and their concordance with actual patient risk profiles were also examined. Method: A prospective study of 193 patients was conducted. Data were collected by self-report and from medical records at 3, 6, and …
Mental health problems in rural contexts
The aim of this review was to determine which sociodemographic, illness-related and psychological/attitudinal factors impact on a person's decision to seek help and the factors associated with attitudes to help-seeking in rural contexts. A computer search of the literature for 1990 – 2006 using the terms “help-seeking” and “mental” found 350 studies. Examination of the abstracts by one of the authors (AK) identified 20 relevant studies, which we …

Introduction of a clinical psychology intern program to a rural mental health Service
specialist clinical psychology skills have becomeincreasingly rare in public mental health services. This lack is particularly problematic in rural andregional Australia, where psychology services of any kind aredifficult to access. One model for the reintroduction of theseskills is to employ later-year clinical psychology postgraduatetrainees under supervision. This model has the advantageof encouraging evidence-based interventions integrated wit…
An evaluation and 1-year follow-up study of a community-based treatment program for sex offenders
The Psychosexual Treatment Program (PTP) is a 35-week community-based group treatment program for sex offenders, based on a cognitive-behavioural approach. An evaluation and follow-up study of this program indicates that the offenders have gained and maintained significant treatment effects for 12 months at the completion of the program: a reduction in the frequency and arousal of offenders' deviant sexual fantasies, an increase in the acceptance…
An Investigation into the Internal Structure of DSM-III Antisocial Personality Disorder
The present study examined the DSM-III antisocial personality disorder by examining endorsements of each of the DSM-III criteria to obtain various indices, including interrater reliability, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive power, alpha levels, and item (criterion)-total correlations. 112 psychiatric inpatients were rated on the Structured Interview for DSM-III Personality. 11 patients were accorded a diagnosis of antisoc…
Using the MCMI-I to diagnose personality disorders in inpatients
The present investigation examined the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-I) personality disorder (PD) diagnostic categories and personality disorder dimensional (BR) scores in 87 patients, to evaluate Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (Third Edition/Revised) (DSM-III/R) statements as regards Axis 1/Axis II associations and PD sex differences. Patients formed three clearly diagnosed Axis I groups: a schizophrenic group (n = 35); an affect…
The clinical utility of the millon clinical multiaxial inventory depression subscales
The present study was an evaluation of the clinical utility of the Psychotic Depression and Dysthymic subscales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-I; Millon, WX3). It was found that these scales could effectively discriminate 25 patients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of affective disorder from 25 patients with DSM-III-R diagnoses of schizophrenia. Both scales had moderate convergent validity with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The…
Which Employment Interview Skills Best Predict the Employability of Schizophrenic Patients
To examine the effects of verbal and nonverbal interview microbehaviors and interview characteristics on employability, Simulated Employment Interviews were conducted with 46 psychiatric inpatients who each met the DSM-III criteria for a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Each interview was videotaped and shown to two raters, who generated independent ratings for six microbehaviors (eye-contact, facial gestures, body posture, verbal content, voice volum…
Are Employment-Interview Skills a Correlate of Subtypes of Schizophrenia
46 inpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of schizophrenia were assessed in the week prior to discharge from hospital on measures of positive and negative symptoms and on 12 measures of employment interview skills (i.e., eye contact, facial gestures, body posture, verbal content, voice volume, length of speech, motivation, self-confidence, ability to communicate, manifest adjustment, manifest intelligence, over-all interview skill), and a global mea…
Self-Administered Consequences
Relationships between differences in perceived value of consequation and levels of task performance were examined utilizing an independent-groups design ( n = 84 postgraduate students). Essentially, the present results replicated the data of an earlier pilot study which used a Latin square design
Does the Perceived Value of Consequation Affect Performance Outcomes? A Laboratory Investigation
25 postgraduate students were exposed to a control and 4 self-consequation conditions in a Latin square design. The experimental tasks were arithmetic problems matched for difficulty. Following each experimental condition, participants responded to a questionnaire to ascertain subjective differences in perceived valence of the particular type of consequation. This procedure yielded two groups designated as ‘adequate’ or ‘inadequate’ within each c…
Behavioural Job-Interview Skills Programmes
Behavioural programmes in job-interview skills training are described and evaluated. Through the employment of a social skills package consisting of instructions, modelling, rehearsal, feedback and reinforcement, clients have been trained in a variety of responses considered important for a successful job-interview. Such responses have included nonverbal behaviours such as eye contact, voice tone, voice volume and body posture, and verbal behavio…
