Labour market coordination and the evolution of tax regimes
This paper investigates the political coalitions giving rise to diverse types of interactions between revenue systems and welfare states. It has been widely acknowledged that coordinated economies with larger public sectors have somewhat regressive tax systems, with a heavy reliance on the taxation of consumption and wages over capital and property. Liberal economies, alternatively, have had more progressive tax systems but smaller welfare states…

Long-Term Adjustment, Prognosis, and Death in Irreversible Diffuse Obstructive Pulmonary Syndromes
Forty subjects with severe debilitating irreversible diffuse obstructive pulmonary syndrome were studied over a 4-year period. They were found to utilize denial, repression, and isolation to protect their failing respiratory systems from environmental inputs. Failure of these defenses led to physiologic and psychologic deterioration. Psychosocial assets were found to be as important as the physiologic assets in the treatment of these patients. Pa…
Changes in Respiration Associated with Hypnotically Induced Emotion, Pain, and Exercise
The effect of hypnotic suggestion of naturally occurring and experimentally induced psychologic stress on the respiratory system was studied in 11 young male subjects. It was found that hypnotic suggestion of deep relaxation and depression formed one end of the spectrum, while suggestion of exercise, anger, and anxiety formed the other end. Psychophysiologic Studies of Pulmonary Ventilation
In a group of 22 subjects, action-oriented behavior has been correlated with hyperventilation in 20 subjects in response to short-term adverse life situations. Seven of the 22 subjects were found to hypoventilate in response to short-term adverse life situations to which they reacted with nonaction orientation. It is shown that estimates of the total fertility by age of mother can be used to give good rough approximations to birth rates in under-developed countries and that this method is likely to be more accurate than the collection of historical data relating to particular calendar periods
