  • The Fire Inside

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2008

Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Roots of Resistance: A History of Land Tenure in New Mexico (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 2007), 239 pages, paperback, $19.95.Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. The cover art of Roots of Resistance is powerful and angry. The stark geometric design, formed by swatches of blazing orange and slashes of smoldering earth tones all descending from cosmos into chaos, highlights abstract images of the suffering, e…

  • Transient Servitude

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2007•Citada por: 3

Defining moments in the history of a nation are time and again overshadowed by the drama of war. These critical events are often domestic policy decisions that affect the immediate state of a country and have serious consequences for the future. Significant examples in U.S. history include: the initial decision of the revolutionary government to found a republic dedicated to the lofty principles of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" bu…

  • Harder Times

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2006•Citada por: 1

Many of the informal economies operating in the world today are the offspring of globalization and need to be understood as such. The economic and social prospects for people engaged in informal employment-sometimes referred to as "precarious" and "off-the-books employment"-as well as their families and communities, are substantially inferior to those associated with formal employment, and the current boom of informal economic activity bodes ill …

  • The Nafta Corridors

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2006

Capital's relentless search for cheap labor constantly alters the flow of surface transportation in North America with widespread consequences. The end-of-century deindustrialization of the United States and importation of cheap commodities from the Far East through the West Coast reversed historical east-west transportation patterns and established Los Angeles and Long Beach as the largest ports in the nation. To minimize transportation costs, w…

  • Silencing the Cells

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2004

People without a voice are not people in any meaningful sense of the word. Silenced people cannot express their ideas; they can neither consent nor protest. They are reduced to being pawns in the schemes of the powerful, mendicants who must accept whatever is imposed upon them. In order to keep people in a state of subjugation, silencing their voices is essential. Nowhere is this clearer than in U.S. prisons. This article can also be found at the …

  • Capital Punishment Update

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2004

Following a short hiatus in the 1970s, capital punishment has regained its position as the most reactionary social policy in America. In the Supreme Court case of Furman v. Georgia, the Court ruled that the death penalty, as it had been practiced prior to 1972, was unconstitutional and effectively placed a legal moratorium on executions in the United States. Four years later, that same Court accepted minor statutory reforms and reinstituted the d…

  • Capitalism and Incarceration Revisited

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2003•Citada por: 1

"Capitalism and Incarceration," written by the author and published in Monthly Review twenty years ago (March 1983), analyzed the relationship between the capitalist economy and the prison system in America and came to an indisputable conclusion: The overall trends and year-by-year correspondence between economic conditions and imprisonment establish quite clearly the relationship between capitalism and incarceration—prisons under capitalism are,…

  • Capitalism and Incarceration

    Richard D Vogel•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1983

"There are no political prisoners in America," say the right-wing ideologists every time the question comes up. "The people who are in prison deserve to be there." This pat answer, however, does not survive concrete analysis. To understand fully the function of the American prison system we need only analyze the historical trends of incarceration and discover how they are related to the economic conditions of the country at large. This article can…
