Recent Research on Obsidian from Missouri Archaeological Sites
Obsidian has been noted at archaeological sites in the Midwest for over 160 years, although very few artifacts made from this material are recorded in archaeological contexts in Missouri. Archaeologists have long been concerned about the incomplete record of Early Woodland evidence in the Midwest. Many broad geographic areas have not even been superficially surveyed, much less systematically researched for evidence of early ceramic cultures, which include Marion and various Black Sand phases. This paper discusses evidence for the exchange networks that intersected through a late prehistoric site on the western margin of the Ozarks in Lawrence County, Missouri. The Dahlman site, 23LA259, was occupied during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries along the Spring River. Two artifact concentrations were discovered during the excavation of adjacent pit features at the Barrington site (23JE600-A) in eastern Missouri. The contents of Feature 1 included a fragmented cylindrical banners tone, a galena nodule, and a large side-notched point. Feature 2 yielded five projectile points of probable Early Archaic age, including two Hardin points, two Rice Lanceolate variants, and one St. Charles point. The features were less…
