Geochemistry and residence time estimation of groundwater from Miocene–Pliocene and Upper Cretaceous aquifers of Southern Tunisia
Isotopic Patterns in Modern Global Precipitation
This chapter contains sections titled: Introduction Concluding Remarks
Carbon Isotope Composition of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide in Southern Poland
Southern Poland is home to numerous large mining and energy industry facilities, which consume relatively great amounts of fossil fuels. Temporal and spatial distribution of CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere were estimated on the basis of 13 C and 14 C isotope measurements in atmospheric CO 2 and in α-cellulose from pine tree rings. The Suess effect was evaluated in the atmospheric CO 2 from the High Tatra Mountains (Kasprowy Wierch) and the urban…
Radiocarbon Dating of Pleistocene Fauna and Flora from Starunia, SW Ukraine
New attempts arc presented to determine the age of large Pleistocene mammals excavated at Starunia, ∼130 km southeast of Lviv, Ukraine. This remarkable discovery made at the beginning of the 20th century included a complete carcass of woolly rhinoceros (No. 2), fragments of 3 woolly rhinoceroses (Nos. 1, 3, and 4) and remnants of numerous specimens of other fossil fauna and flora. Although attempts to date paleontological findings from Starunia s…
Natural Radiocarbon Measurements in Brazilian Soils Developed on Basic Rocks
This paper presents 14 C, 13 C and chemical data of soil organic matter (SOM) in three soil profiles under native forests from Brazil: Londrina (southern), Piracicaba (southeastern) and Altamira (northern). The main objective is to use carbon isotopes in tropical and subtropical soils of Brazil to provide information about vegetation changes that occurred in relation to climate changes during the Holocene. 14 C data from SOM indicate that the org…
Spatial and temporal variability of stable isotope composition of precipitation over the South American continent
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is conducting a world-wide survey of the isotope composition of precipitation. At present, around 60 stations are providing information on the stable isotope composition of precipitation over the South American continent. During the recent years, several national monitoring networks have been initiated (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuado…
Atmospheric 14 CO 2 Variations in the Equatorial Region
We present here first results of 14 CO 2 monitoring at two sampling sites in the equatorial region of the South American continent (station Aychapicho, Ecuador and station Llano del Hato, Venezuela). We also include the data for two other stations representing undisturbed marine atmosphere at mid-latitudes of both hemispheres, far from large continental sources and sinks of CO 2 (station Izaña, Tenerife, Spain and station Cape Grim, Tasmania). Be…
Relation Between Long-Term Trends of Oxygen-18 Isotope Composition of Precipitation and Climate
Stable isotope ratios of oxygen ( 18 O/ 16 O) and hydrogen (D/H) in water have long been considered powerful indicators of paleoclimate. However, quantitative interpretation of isotope variations in terms of climate changes is hampered by a limited understanding of physical processes controlling the global isotope behavior. Analysis was conducted of time series of 18 O content (δ 18 O) of monthly precipitation and surface air temperature availabl…
The IAEA 14 C Intercomparison Exercise 1990
As a follow-up to the meeting of experts convened at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in February 1989, and the International 14 C Workshop held in Glasgow in September 1989, the 14 C Quality Assurance Program was formulated. In a joint effort of several radiocarbon teams and IAEA staff, we have prepared a set of five new intercomparison materials. These are natural materials frequently used by radiocarbon laboratories. The materials…
Possibilities for Reconstructing Radiocarbon Level Changes During the Late Glacial by Using a Laminated Sequence of Gościaż Lake
Laminated sediments of Gościaż Lake can be used as an independent source of material for calibrating the radiocarbon time scale. The varve chronology is based on three long cores from the deepest part of the lake, with one additional core from the second deepest part. From pollen and Cladocera spectra and stable isotope and chemical content sequences, we have determined the Allerød(AL)/Younger Dryas(YD) and Younger Dryas/Preboreal(PB) boundaries …
Intercalibration of Environmental Isotope Measurements
We briefly present here the environmental isotope intercalibration programs of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In fact, the IAEA has implemented two parallel programs during the last 20 years: for stable isotopes of light elements and for a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, tritium. This IAEA activity resulted in the preparation of a number of reference and intercomparison materials of various types, now stored in the Agency and ava…
Formation of 13 C/ 12 C Isotope Ratios in Speleothems
A theoretical approach towards predicting the carbon isotope composition of carbonate cave deposits is presented. The proposed model simulates time variations of both the chemical and isotopic composition of the carbonate solution and deposited calcite in the course of CaCO 3 precipitation. Two phases of the precipitation process are distinguished and treated separately: initial outgassing of the solution until a certain degree of supersaturation…
