A Survey of the 14 C Content of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon in Chinese Lakes
We present radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from surface waters of 11 lakes, widely distributed in China. Surface lake water DIC F 14 C values show distinct differences, and we relate these to the physical exchange character (“open” or “closed”) of each lake. Open lakes studied here generally have lower DIC F 14 C values than closed lakes. We present a simple model of a lake water cycle to calculate an average …
C Measurements of Dissolved Inorganic and Organic Carbon in Qinghai Lake and Inflowing Rivers (NE Tibet, Qinghai Plateau), China
There have been a number of studies that have attempted to estimate the past radiocarbon reservoir effects in Qinghai Lake, China. This article reports on measurements on modern samples collected at the lake in October 2003 and October 2009, which allow us to better understand the systematics of the lake and shed new insights on the processes occurring in the lake. The results indicate that atmospheric exchange of 14 C is the main process affecti…
Late Glacial to Middle Holocene climate and environmental changes as recorded in Lake Dood sediments, Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia
Modern and Pleistocene Reservoir Ages Inferred from South Pacific Corals
This paper presents radiocarbon results from modern South Pacific corals from the Marquesas Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea (PNG), and Easter Island. All of the measurements are from pre-bomb Porites corals that lived during the 1940s and 1950s. The data reflect subannual to multiannual surface ocean 14 C variability and allow for precise, unambiguous reservoir age determinations. The results are compared with published values from other coral…
Major Patterns in the Neolithic Chronology of East Asia
General chronological frameworks created recently for the Neolithic complexes of China, Japan, Korea, and far eastern Russia allow us to reveal temporal patterns of Neolithization, origin of food production, and the emergence of civilizations. Pottery originated in East Asia, most probably independently in different parts of it, in the terminal Pleistocene, about 14,800–13,300 BP (uncalibrated), and this marks the beginning of the Neolithic. Agri…
Radiocarbon Results from a 13-Kyr BP Coral from the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea
This paper presents radiocarbon results from a single Goniastrea favulus coral from Papua New Guinea which lived continuously between 13.0 and 13.1 kyr BP. The specimen was collected from a drill core on the Huon Peninsula and has been independently dated with 230 Th. A site-specific reservoir correction has been applied to the results, and coral growth bands were used to calibrate individual growth years. Alternating density bands, which are the…
Chronology of Prehistoric Cultural Complexes of Sakhalin Island (Russian Far East)
A chronological framework for the prehistoric cultural complexes of Sakhalin Island is presented based on 160 radiocarbon dates from 74 sites. The earliest 14 C-dated site, Ogonki 5, corresponds to the Upper Paleolithic, about 19,500–17,800 BP. According to the 14 C data, since about 8800 BP, there is a continuous sequence of Neolithic, Early Iron Age, and Medieval complexes. The Neolithic existed during approximately 8800–2800 BP. Transitional N…
Stepped-Combustion 14 C Dating of Bomb Carbon in Lake Sediment
In this study, we applied a stepped-combustion approach to dating post-bomb lake sediment from north-central Mississippi. Samples were combusted at a low temperature (400 °) and then at 900 °. The CO 2 was collected separately for both combustions and analyzed. The goal of this work was to develop a methodology to improve the accuracy of 14 C dating of sediment by combusting at a lower temperature and reducing the amount of reworked carbon bound …
Radiocarbon Calibration and Comparison to 50 Kyr BP with Paired 14 C and 230 Th Dating of Corals from Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea
We calibrated portions of the radiocarbon time scale with combined 230 Th, 231 Pa, 14 C measurements of corals collected from Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu and the Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea. The new data map 14 C variations ranging from the current limit of the tree-ring calibration [11,900 calendar years before present (cal BP), Kromer and Spurk 1998, now updated to 12,400 cal B P, see Kromer et al., this issue], to the 14 C-dating limit of 50,…
Radiocarbon in Seawater at Radioactive Waste Dumping Sites in the Northeast Atlantic and Northwest Pacific
Radiocarbon has been an important constituent of radioactive wastes dumped in the open ocean and marginal seas as well as wastes released from nuclear reprocessing plants. Therefore, in some regions these sources could have a greater impact on 14 C concentration in seawater than global fallout. The high analytical sensitivity of 14 C measurement by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) allows even tracer amounts of 14 C to be found in seawater at r…
Converting AMS Data to Radiocarbon Values
We summarize the basic operation of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) systems used to measure radiocarbon and discuss the calculations used to convert AMS output to 14 C data
Sample Preparation of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Groundwater for AMS 14 C Analysis
This study describes a sample preparation technique used to isolate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in groundwater for radiocarbon analysis using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The goal of the work is to improve our ability to determine groundwater residence times based on 14 C measurements of the DOC fraction in groundwater. Water samples were collected from carbonate and volcanic rock aquifers in southern Nevada. Multiple measurements of t…
Stepped-Combustion 14 C Dating of Sediment
Radiocarbon dating of bulk sediment has long been used as a method of last resort when reliable wood, charcoal, or plant macrofossils are not available for analysis. Accurate dating of sediment is complicated by the presence of multiple organic carbon fractions, each with a potentially different 14 C activity. Additionally, the presence of carbon bound by clay minerals can significantly reduce the accuracy of a sediment age determination, with th…
A High-Resolution Radiocarbon Calibration Between 11,700 and 12,400 Calendar Years Bp Derived from 230 Th Ages of Corals from Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu
This paper presents radiocarbon results from a single Diploastrea heliopora coral from Vanuatu that lived during the Younger Dryas climatic episode, between ca. 11,700 and 12,400 calendar yr bp. The specimen has been independently dated with multiple 230 Th measurements to permit calibration of the 14 C time scale. Growth bands in the coral were used to identify individual years of growth. 14 C measurements were made on each year. These values we…
Mass Spectrometric 14 C and U-Th Measurements in Coral
We discuss U-Th and 14 C measurements in coral. Samples with U-Th dates in excess of 50 ka BP were chosen for study. Some bulk samples from this group have measurable 14 C dates, which range from 30 ka to 43 ka bp. These can be explained by 0.5–2.5% contamination by modern carbon. This small amount of contamination can produce significant offsets in 14 C dates of coral samples older than ≃10 ka. It may be undetectable in X-ray powder diffraction …
Dissolved Organic and Inorganic 14 C Concentrations and Ages for Coastal Plain Aquifers in Southern Maryland
The Aquia (Paleocene) and Magothy (Late Cretaceous) Formations of the Atlantic Coastal Plain represent two well-characterized (hydrodynamically and geochemically) aquifers in southern Maryland. 14 C measurements of the dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic carbon (DIC) of Aquia and Magothy groundwaters have been made using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Both DI 14 C and DO 14 C concentrations in the initial flow path are unexpectedly low. A…
