  • Development history and carbon accumulation of a slope bog in oceanic British Columbia, Canada

    Open Access•Carrie Turunen, Jukka Turunen•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Citada por: 9•Referências: 2

Palaeoecological techniques and radiocarbon datings were used to reconstruct the initiation and development of a sloping bog system near Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. Peat initiation began around 12 000 cal. BP, possibly as a result of a cool, wet climate prior to the insolation maximum. A Picea sitchensis-Tsuga heterophylla-Alnus minerotrophic wet fern forest occupied the study site from 9300 to 8300 cal. BP. Between 8300 and 7500 cal…

  • Estimating carbon accumulation rates of undrained mires in Finland–application to boreal and subarctic regions

    Open Access•Jukka Turunen, Erkki Tomppo et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 8•Referências: 5

Equations based on empirical relationships of peat physical properties were used to estimate the average long-term apparent rate of carbon accumulation (LORCA) in Finnish mire vegetation regions. The results were generalized to the boreal and subarctic regions. Analyses of 1302 dated peat cores were used to infer carbon accumulation for each mire vegetation region of Finland. The area-weighted LORCA for Finnish undrained mire areas was 18.5 g m 2…

  • Holocene vegetation history from the Salym-Yugan Mire Area, West Siberia

    Open Access•Aki Pitkänen, Jukka Turunen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Citada por: 3•Referências: 7

The pollen stratigraphy of an ombrotrophic patterned ridge-hollow raised bog in the Salym-Yugan Mire Area in boreal West Siberia (60°109N, 72°509E) covers the entire Holocene period. Pollen data from three parallel peat cores suggest that, contrary to previous assumptions, Betula forests did not spread into tundra until the Boreal period (9000–10000 cal. BP). After 9000 cal. BP, Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies forests displaced Betula forests in…

  • Carbon accumulation in permafrost peatlands in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Canada

    Open Access•Sheila R Vardy, Barry G Warner et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Citada por: 6•Referências: 2

Average long-term apparent rates of carbon (C) accumulation (LARCA) were estimated for four peat cores from Arctic and Subarctic Canada. Detailed analyses of dry bulk-density and C content were used to determine variations in C accumulation rates throughout the cores. LARCA range from 12.5 to 16.5 g C m -2 yr -1 over the past 6700-10000 years. Rates are lower for the surface layers of Arctic high-centred peat polygons, at 5.3 to 7.1 g C m -2 yr -…

  • The role of fire in the carbon dynamics of a mire, eastern Finland

    Open Access•Aki Pitkänen, Jukka Turunen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Citada por: 4•Referências: 5

The fire history and the effect of fires on the long-term (apparent) rate of carbon accumulation (LORCA) in the Patvinsuo mire complex, eastern Finland, were determined through stratigraphic and pollen analyses of 98 peat cores. The peat cores were characterized by a large number of charcoal layers and the age of the basal peat varied between 57 and 10 500 years. Mire fires slowed down the progress of vertical peat accumulation and resulted in gr…

  • Accumulation rates of carbon in mires in Finland and implications for climate change

    Open Access•Kimmo Tolonen, Jukka Turunen•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1996•Citada por: 17•Referências: 2

Stratigraphical analyses based on 1028 dated Holocene peat cores were used to estimate the rate of carbon accumulation in Finnish peatlands. Results were compared with data from other Boreal areas. The basal age of peat columns was found to be the best predictor of carbon accumulation and a significant correlation between depth and age of peat was evident. When normalized for the mean depth of peatlands in Finland ( c. 1.5 m), the average long-te…

  • Estimating Long-Term Carbon Accumulation Rates in Boreal Peatlands by Radiocarbon Dating

Open Access•Atte Korhola, Kimmo Tolonen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Citada por: 1•Referências: 17

We used direct radiocarbon dates of peat samples, pollen dates and land-uplift chronology from >1300 cores comprising all or most of the Holocene in the boreal region of Finland, Estonia and Maine (USA) to obtain long-term carbon accumulation rates for boreal peatlands. The “apparent” long-term rate of carbon accumulation (LORCA; g C m −2 a −1 ) ranged from 4.6 to 85.8 (mean 19.9 ± 10.7), depending on the geographical location, wetland type and t…
