  • Puzzling Radiocarbon Dates for the Upper Paleolithic Site of Sungir (Central Russian Plain)

Open Access•Yaroslav V Kuzmin, Johannes Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Citada por: 8•Referências: 15

A summary is presented of more than a decade-long study of direct radiocarbon dating for one of the most important human burials in Eurasia, the Sungir site in eastern Europe. Eighteen 14 C dates were produced before early 2014 on three skeletons (Sungir 1–3), and there is still no consistency in the results. In the absence of other independent methods to establish the antiquity of Sungir, a careful analysis is performed of the site's stratigraph…

  • Collection of radiocarbon dates on the mammoths ( Mammuthus Primigenius ) and other genera of Wrangel Island, northeast Siberia, Russia

    Open Access•Sergey Vartanyan, Sergey L Vartanyan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

We present and discuss a full list of radiocarbon dates for woolly mammoth and other species of the Mammoth fauna available from Wrangel Island, northeast Siberia, Russia. Most of the radiocarbon dates are published here for the first time. Of the124 radiocarbon dates on mammoth bone, 106 fall between 3700 and 9000 yr ago. We believe these dates bracket the period of mammoth isolation on Wrangel Island and their ultimate extinction, which we attr…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Large Holocene Volcanic Events Within South Kamchatka (Russian Far East)

    Open Access•Natalia E Zaretskaya, Vera V Ponomareva et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Citada por: 4•Referências: 13

Radiocarbon dating is widely used when studying recent volcanic activity in the Kamchatka Peninsula due to the abundance of organic matter that is associated with the volcanic deposits. Here, we present the results of 14 C dating of major volcanic events within the active South Kamchatka volcanic zone. South Kamchatka includes 8 recently active volcanic centers (stratovolcanoes, calderas, and large craters) that have been erupting during the Holo…

  • Holocene vegetational and climatic changes in the forest zone of Western Siberia according to pollen records from the extrazonal palsa bog Bugristoye

    Open Access•Tatyana A Blyakharchuk, Leopold D Sulerzhitsky•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Citada por: 8•Referências: 2

Pollen stratigraphy of an extrazonal palsa bog in the middle taiga of the West Siberian Plain is dated by radiocarbon at five levels. Local pollen assemblage zones (LPAZ) are the basis for palaeogeographical reconstructions. Tundra-steppe plant communities with shrub birch ( Betula nana) dominated in the latest Pleistocene. Warming after 10 000 14 C yr BP caused the local thawing of permafrost, forming shallow lakes. Larixand then Picea spread al…

  • Holocene Key-Marker Tephra Layers in Kamchatka, Russia

    Open Access•Olga A Braitseva, Vera Ponomareva et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1997

Detailed tephrochronological studies in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, permitted documentation of 24 Holocene key-marker tephra layers related to the largest explosive eruptions from 11 volcanic centers. Each layer was traced for tens to hundreds of kilometers away from the source volcano; its stratigraphic position, area of dispersal, age, characteristic features of grain-size distribution, and chemical and mineral composition confirmed its identi…

  • C Chronology of Stone Age Cultures in the Russian Far East

    Open Access•Y V Kuzmin, A J T Jull et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Citada por: 5•Referências: 8

Ca. 150 unequivocal 14 C dates from the prehistoric cultures in the Russian Far East can be used to elucidate chrono-cultural boundaries in that region. Microblade technology started as early as ca. 20,000 bp, and continued to exist in the middle Amur River basin until ca. 10,500 bp, and in Primorye until ca. 7800 bp. The emergence of pottery-making in the lower Amur River basin goes back to ca. 13,300 bp. The transition from Upper Paleolithic to…

  • The Early History of Moscow

Open Access•Alexander L Alexandrovskiy, Johannes Van Der Plicht et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Referências: 2

For the first time, a series of 14 C dates has been obtained for samples from the archaeological excavations in Red Square, the historical center of Moscow. The remains of burned dwellings from the bottom of the cultural layer were dated as well as dispersed charcoal from the underlying plough soil. The results correspond to a 200-yr time interval and prove that arable activity at the site began as early as the late 11th century ad. The field bel…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of the Stone and Bronze Age Sites in Primorye (Russian Far East)

    Open Access•Y V Kuzmin, Lyobov A Orlova et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1994•Citada por: 9•Referências: 2

The first results of radiocarbon dating of the ancient sites in the Russian Far East were published early in the 1960s (Okladnikov 1964). We now have enough data to establish the main features in the 14 C chronology of the Stone and Bronze Age cultures in Primorye, one of the archaeologically well-studied regions of the Russian Far East
