Middle-to late-Holocene environmental changes in the Garigliano delta plain (Central Italy)
Geomorphologic, stratigraphic, faunistic, palynological and 14 C analyses were carried out in the area of the mouth of the Garigliano River characterized by two strand plains that are referred to the Eutyrrhenian and the Holocene, rimming two depressed zones separated by the Garigliano River channel. This study depicts the palaeoenvironmental evolution over the last 8200 years and the landscape context at the time of Minturnae Roman colony. Betwe…
The Tiber river delta plain (central Italy)
Geomorphologic, stratigraphic, faunistic, palynological and carbon isotope analyses were carried out in the area of the Tiber river mouth. The results depict a complex palaeoenvironmental evolution in the area of the Roman town of Ostia, ascertain the changes of the Tiber river delta over the last 6000 years and support a re-interpretation of some archaeologic issues. The wave-dominated Tiber delta evolved through three distinct phases. In the fi…
Climatic versus human impact on the Holocene sedimentation in river valleys of different order
Evidence of a two-fold glacial advance during the last glacial maximum in the Tagliamento end moraine system (eastern Alps)
The glacial history of the Tagliamento morainic amphitheater (southeastern Alpine foreland, Italy) during the last glacial maximum (LGM) has been reconstructed by means of a geological survey and drillings, radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis in the amphitheater and in the sandur. Two phases of glacial culmination, separated by a distinct recession, are responsible for glacial landforms and related sediments in the outer part of the amphitheat…
Holocene climate phases from buried soils in Tigray (northern Ethiopia)
Stratigraphic analysis of alluvial/colluvial sequences and 14 C dating have been used as proxies for Holocene climate changes in the highlands of Tigray (northern Ethiopia). The studied records show alternations of buried soils and peaty–clayey sediments, pointing to wet, stabilization phases, and organic-free colluvium layers resulting from the abrupt occurrence of dry-climate episodes. The 14 C dates, mostly unpublished, cluster in the 11,090–9…
Major Constraints on the Use of Radiocarbon Dating for Tephrochronology
The geomorphological evolution of the outskirts of Naples during the Holocene
Lithostratigraphic analysis, geologic and geomorphologic surveys, and radiocarbon dating were car ried out to elucidate the evolution of the Bagnoli-Fuorigrotta depression. The origin of the feature, located at the outskirts of Naples and confined between the ridge of Posillipo and the Agnano volcanic centre, was triggered by the huge volcanic-tectonic collapse, subsequent to the Tufo Giallo Napoletano emplacement (12 ka BP), which caused the Phl…

Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Rome Radiocarbon Dates III
This is a partial list of archaeological samples processed between May 1990 and December 1992 at the Department of Earth Sciences Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory of the University of Rome. Most of the samples in the list, both from Italy and other countries, were related to excavations carried out by researchers at the University of Rome, Department of Scienze dell'Antichità. Although primarily measured for archaeological studies, some of these dat…

This paper includes 14 C measurements of geological and environmental samples processed by liquid scintillation counting of benzene between 1991 and the end of 1992. All samples, from central and northern Italy and from the Gulf of Venice, Adriatic Sea, relate to scientific projects conducted in collaboration with colleagues from both Italian universities and National Council of Research (CNR) institutions

Radiocarbon Dating of Paleoseismicity Along an Earthquake Fault in Southern Italy
On 23 November 1980, a major earthquake (M s = 6.9) struck a large area of the southern Apennines (Campania and Lucania regions, southern Italy). This seismic event, the largest in Italy over the last 80 years, almost completely destroyed 15 villages and caused extensive damage to other towns, including Naples. The quake produced the first well-documented example in Italy of surface dislocation, represented by a fault scarp 38 km long. We underto…

We report here, in part, dates measured on samples from Italy since the construction of a new 14 C lab in 1990 for research in the fields of geology, paleomorphology and the biogeochemical cycle of carbon. We use liquid scintillation counting (LSC), following sample conversion to benzene through the four classical chemical steps: 1) combustion or hydrolysis to CO 2 ; 2) production of Li 2 C 2 ; 3) hydrolysis to C 2 H 2 ; 4) trimerization of acety…

C Tephrochronology With Different Fractions of Paleosol Humic Matter at Procida Island, Italy
14 C apparent ages along with δ 13 C values for three different fractions of humic matter (HM) isolated from a suite of four paleosols (PAs) interbedded within tephra are reported. The dated HM fractions were: 1) HA, the easily released humic acids; 2) HA tot , the bulk of humic acids; 3) RES, the insoluble HM. The 14 C sequence dated from 13,000–25,000 BP, in agreement with stratigraphy and previous data. Age differences up to 2540±430 were stat…
Huntite, a Mineral Used in Antiquity
S An unusual occurrence of huntite CaMg 3 (CO 3 ) 4 , found in a wooden box pertaining to the cargo of a sunken Roman ship of imperial age in the Golfo di Procchio on the north coast of Elba is described. The huntite has been identified on the basis of chemical analysis, thermo‐gravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, X‐ray diffraction and electron microscope images. Having ruled out its origin by the reaction of sea water on some pre…
