Radiocarbon Dating of Kohitsugire Calligraphies Attributed to Asukai Masatsune and the Periods of Origin of Genji Monogatari Emaki and Ban- Dainagon Ekotoba
Genji monogatari emaki and Ban-dainagon ekotoba are Japanese national treasures. Although the periods in which they were painted have not been accurately determined, radiocarbon dating cannot be applied to these priceless artifacts because of the destructive nature of 14 C dating. In this study, the periods of their origin were determined by 14 C dating the kohitsugire calligraphy. Kohitsugire are ancient paper sheets containing graceful calligra…
Using foraminiferal Mg/Ca ratios to detect an ocean-warming trend in the twentieth century from coastal shelf sediments in the Bungo Channel, southwest Japan
To assess abnormal warming of temperature in southwest Japan's coastal seas during the twentieth century, we developed a 200 yr interannually resolved record of planktonic and benthic foraminiferal Mg/Ca-based temperature using neritic coastal sediment cores. The winter to late spring bottom temperature (50 m) record, based on benthic foraminiferal ( Nonion japonicum) Mg/Ca ratios in the Bungo Channel (BC), showed consistent variation with observ…
Geoarchaeological investigations at the upper Paleolithic site of Kamihoronai‐Moi, Hokkaido, Japan
In order to better understand modern human behavioral variability in Hokkaido, Japan, we consider the geoarchaeology of the Kamihoronai‐Moi site in terms of its geochronology, stratigraphy, depositional environments, and post‐depositional disturbances. A Paleolithic component is stratigraphically situated between the Eniwa‐a (15,000–17,000 14 C yr B.P.) and the Tarumae‐d (8000–9000 14 C yr B.P.) tephras. Moreover, six AMS 14 C ages on charcoal fr…
Mema in the History of West Africa
Mema is the area between Kumbi Saleh that is considered as one of the capitals of ancient Ghana, and the middle Niger River where many kingdoms existed in the medieval times. Actually, Mema is in the dry savanna where agriculture is almost impossible. But, in ancient times, it was rich in water, because there ran a confluent of the Niger River. The prosperity of this region is attested by the existence of over one hundred archaeological sites.Thi…
AMS 14 C Dating of Iron Artifacts
We have developed a prototype carbon extraction system for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating of archaeological iron remains by combusting them with a RF induction furnace. We have also successfully tested and used a method of carbon extraction from iron using a CuCl 2 solution. Modifications to our carbon extraction systems and methods provide us acceptable performances; carbon yield is normally around 80% and the 14 C backgr…
Radiocarbon Dating of Kohitsugire (Paper Fragments) Attributed to Japanese Calligraphists in the Heian–Kamakura Period
A kohitsugire is a paper fragment from an old manuscript written mainly in the Heian and Kamakura periods. Although they contain significant information for historical, literary, and paleographical study, because of their antique handwriting and description of historical incidents, there are many copies and counterfeits written several centuries later. In this study, radiocarbon ages of kohitsugire were measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (…
Radiocarbon Dating of Charred Residues on the Earliest Pottery in Japan
Recently, primitive-type pottery was discovered in the Russian Far East, China, and Japan. Radiocarbon ages of far earlier than 10,000 BP have been obtained, relating directly or indirectly to the pottery. As an example of these very old 14 C ages for incipient pottery, we report here 14 C ages of charred adhesions on five potsherds and three charred wood fragments that were collected with the archeological artifacts (stone tools from the Chojaku…
Isotopic Analysis and Cycling of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon at Lake Biwa, Central Japan
This paper reports on concentrations and carbon isotopic results of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water samples collected at four locations and from several depths in Lake Biwa, central Japan, covering every season of the year, starting in the spring of 1995. Depth profiles of DIC concentration and DIC δ 13 C showed a strong seasonal pattern, as a result of vertical mixing of the lake water in winter and early spring, or lack of mixing in t…
C Dating Ancient Japanese Documents
We measured radiocarbon ages of 11 pieces of ancient Japanese documents by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The purpose of this study is to compare the relationship between the calibrated 14 C age and the historical age of Japanese paper samples. Calibrated ages of nine pieces agree with their historical ages, indicating that Japanese ancient documents can be used for 14 C dating in the recent historic period. On the other hand, the 14 C age …
