Abu Salabikh – Absolute Radiocarbon Chronology
This article presents a new absolute chronology for the archaeological site of Abu Salabikh, Southern Iraq, during the 4 th and 3 rd millennia BC. The main goals of this study were to synchronise the sequences of the West and Main Mounds, corroborating the dating schemes based on archaeological and textual finds, and assigning an absolute date to the transition between Uruk and Early Dynastic (ED) periods. Previously published dates and newly pro…
Peeter Espak, The God Enki in Sumerian Royal Ideology and Mythology (Philippika 87)
P. Espak’s book The God Enki is a daring attempt to compile and interpret the available Sumerian sources pertaining to the all-important figure of the god Enki/Ea and related deities. The author focuses on two main bodies of evidence: royal inscriptions and mythological texts. References to other sources of information regarding ancient beliefs and worship, such as archaeology, onomastics, religious texts and wisdom literature, appear scattered a…
New Radiocarbon Dates From Southern Mesopotamia (Fara and Ur)
This article reports three new radiocarbon dates from the Iraqi sites of Tell Fara (Shuruppak) and Tell Muqayyar (Ur), produced as a part of a larger dating project on the absolute chronology of Southern Mesopotamia from the Uruk period until the Akkadian era. The radiocarbon results presented here offer good absolute time estimates for the ED I/II period at Fara and the most reliable absolute age so far for the important archaeological find that…
The Dramatic Abandonment of a Late-Antique Settlement in the South Caucasus
This paper presents the first results of a new project investigating the provincial structure of the eastern Caucasus region in the late Antique and early Islamic periods. Excavations at the newly discovered rural archaeological site of Qaratəpə have so far revealed two phases of use: a burial ground dating to the 12th century a.d. and an unusually large earthen structure burnt in a catastrophic fire. Owing to the rapid abandonment of this buildi…
Radiocarbon Dating of Early Dynastic Mesopotamia
This paper describes the results of Bayesian modeling of radiocarbon dates from Early Bronze Age contexts in Southern Mesopotamia, modern-day southern Iraq. The model uses 14 C dates available in the literature, employing archaeological and textual information to correlate contexts from a number of important Mesopotamian sites. The insufficient number of dates makes it impossible to precisely define the chronology of the period in question; howev…
An Absolute Chronological Framework for the Central‐Eastern E uropean E neolithic
B ayesian analysis of a large corpus of radiocarbon measurements from central and eastern E urope has been performed in order to revisit and modify archaeological models of the spatio‐temporal development of three E neolithic cultures (the F unnel B eaker, the G lobular A mphora and the C orded W are cultures). While the results place the origins of the F unnel B eaker and the C orded W are cultures in central‐eastern P oland, it was impossible t…
