  • Economies of Memory in Greek Tragedy

    Open Access•Paola Ceccarelli•CHAPTER•Greek Memories•2019

This chapter explores the interaction between immaterial memory, the materiality of writing and forms of reciprocity. After a survey of the ways in which tragic playwrights bring memory into play, it focuses on two case studies. In Sophocles’ Ajax social ties and economies of gratitude break down since some of the protagonists refuse to remember: the Atreidae consign to oblivion Ajax’s services to the common Greek cause; Ajax himself is indiffere…

  • Greek Memories

    Open Access•Pantelia Pantelia, M Alexiou et al.•BOOK•Greek Memories•2019

Greek Memories aims to identify and examine the central concepts underlying the theories and practices of memory in the Greek world, from the archaic period to Late Antiquity, across all the main literary genres, and to trace some fundamental changes in these theories and practices. It explores the interaction and development of different 'disciplinary' approaches to memory in Ancient Greece, which will enable a fuller and deeper understanding of…

  • Letters and Communities

Paola Ceccarelli, Lutz Doering et al.•BOOK•Letters and Communities•2018

The writing of letters often evokes associations of a single author and a single addressee, who share in the exchange of intimate thoughts across distances of space and time. This model underwrites such iconic notions as the letter representing an ‘image of the soul of the author’ or constituting ‘one half of a dialogue’. However justified this conception of letter-writing may be in particular instances, it tends to marginalize a range of issues …

  • Letters and Decrees

    Paola Ceccarelli•BOOK•Letters and Communities•2018

During the Hellenistic period, royal correspondence constituted a challenging mode of diplomacy for polis communities. The chapter offers a case study of how one such community, Magnesia on the Maeander, responded to the challenge. The dossier in question concerns the request of acceptance of a new contest for Artemis Leukophryene, first celebrated in 208 BCE, which Magnesia addressed to all of the Greek world. The answers from kings, leagues, an…

  • Letters, Diplomacy, and the Roman Conquest of Greece

Ingo Gildenhard, Robin Osborne et al.•BOOK•Letters and Communities•2018

The chapter explores the ways in which the generic expectations of the letter differ from those of the decree, insofar as letters tend to contain discursive explanations of, or background to, the requests or decisions that they convey: the sender of a letter will not simply send instructions but will attempt to enable the recipient to understand why those instructions are being given, or at least to put them into a broader context. More specifica…

  • Writing and Letter Writing

Paola Ceccarelli•CHAPTER•Ancient Greek Letter Writing A…•2013

The second chapter opens with a discussion of the evidence for the beginnings and the impact of alphabetic writing, and more generally the sociology of early writing; it emphasizes regional differentiation, and argues that long-distance communication was not among the earliest uses of writing. Against this background it then traces the development of letter writing as a genre on the basis of a detailed analysis of the enunciation of the earliest …

  • When a Letter and Why? Narrative Strategies in the Ancient Historians

Paola Ceccarelli•CHAPTER•Ancient Greek Letter Writing A…•2013

The analysis of long-distance communication in Herodotus emphasizes the closeness of oral and written messages, and the negative connotations of epistolary writing. Letter-writing characters are marked in Herodotus as oriental or tyrannical; letter writing itself can be often deceptive (and references to letters are striking enough to be used as structuring devices within the narrative). This is no longer the case in Thucydides, although letters …

  • Writing and Letter Writing on the Athenian Dramatic Stage

Paola Ceccarelli•CHAPTER•Ancient Greek Letter Writing A…•2013

All references to writing in Athenian drama (both tragedy and comedy) are here contrastively analyzed, to tease out the specific connotations of epistolary writing. The chapter emphasizes that in Athens it is letter writing, and not writing in itself, that is problematic, because of its privateness and secrecy. While it is difficult to correlate directly the uses of letters in tragedy with those in Athenian political — or everyday — life, a comic…

  • Ancient Greek Letter Writing

Paola Ceccarelli•BOOK•Ancient Greek Letter Writing A…•2013•Citada por: 21

The book offers a history of the development of letter writing in ancient Greece from the archaic to the early Hellenistic period. At the end of the fifth and beginning of the fourth century a turning point in epistolography takes place, as an epistolary language appropriate to, and standard for, private communication is developed. Highlighting the specificity of letter-writing, as opposed to other forms of communication and writing, the volume l…

  • Naming the Aegean Sea

    Paola Ceccarelli•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Historical Review•2012•Citada por: 1•Referências: 26

I ask whether it is possible, within the historical context of archaic and early classical Greece, to look at identity from the perspective of the sea. Starting from the observation that seas are usually named from the coastline they border, and that they are thus perceived as linked to that coastline, I look at the naming of the Aegean Sea. After discussing the ancient explanations, I conclude that the numerous islands and fragmented coastline o…

  • Dancing the Pyrrhichē in Athens

    Paola Ceccarelli•CHAPTER•Music and the Muses•2004

This chapter discusses the pyrrhichē and provides a detailed investigation into the iconographic, textual, and epigraphic evidence for this dance. Particular attention is paid to the contexts in which it was performed, notably at the Panathenaia, the Tauropolia, and the Apatouria festivals, in the dances of tragedy, comedy and choral lyric, and in association with Dionysiac cult and funerary ritual. What seems to link these different contexts is …

    Open Access•Paola Ceccarelli•ARTICLE•Dialogues d histoire ancienne•1995

    Open Access•Paola Ceccarelli•ARTICLE•Dialogues d histoire ancienne•1995

This is an critical analysis of the book by I. Papadopoulou-Belmehdi, "Le chant de Pénélope. Poétique du tissage féminin dans l''Odyssée'", Belin, Paris 1994. The theme of Penelope's weaving is central in the structure of the Odyssey : weaving makes Penelope similar to other weaving nymphs ; as such, she stops the time at Ithaca and destroys a whole generation of young men. The 'unreal worlds' and Ithaca are not so different in this respect ; and…
